The Nairator: Rotary Club of Haverhill, Massachusetts

Happy New Year

Tuesday, January 02, 2007

Hi Tim,

Congratulations to the lucky winners of the Annual Diamond Raffle. Doug Ewing won the diamond pendent; Jim Vanderpol took home the autographed Doug Flutie framed picture; and to my surprise, I won the $50.00 bond. Thank you, Egan Davis for doing the honors of drawing the names. Early reports are that we made over $3,000.00 on this fundraising raffle. Thanks to Chuck Marvin, Buddy Baker and Sheryl Meehan for organizing it and all who participated!

Speaking of participating, Ken Smith awarded "Ding A Ling" certificates to all who rang the bell last Saturday for the annual Salvation Army Kettle Drive. The final count and announcement of the service club winner of this championship contest will be made public January 23 at the Tom Vartabedian Honorary Breakfast. Tickets to the breakfast are $25.00 and can be purchased through the Pentucket Bank, HL Farmer & Sons Funeral Homes or the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce. Haverhill Rotary is a sponsor of the event along with other local service organizations. Mark your calendars!

It was good to see past-president Mike Hart at the podium again to officially announce the slate of officers for the coming year. Congratulations to our newest member of the Rotary Board of Directors, Frank Novak.

I wish one and all a very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, safe travels and peace in the New Year ahead.

Until next time,
President Darlene

Here 'N There

A fitting end to our Rotary year includes the election of a new slate of officers for 2006-2007 including President-Elect Vin Bonanno and our newest Director, Frank Novak. Congratulations to all.

If you're dreaming of a white Christmas, try Denver this year.

Don't ask of your friends what you, yourself, can do.

Congratulations to the Rotary necklace raffle winner Doug Ewing, the Doug Flutie framed photo winner Jim Vanderpol and the bond winner, Darlene Beal.

Friendship is a plant we must often water.

Many Rotarians had a ringing sensation in their ears this past weekend. Many thanks.

Program Highlights

Superintendent of Schools Raleigh Buchanan introduced Dr. Stephen O'Brien, Curriculum Director of the Haverhill School System.

Raleigh commented on how things have to change in education. There is a serious plan to overhaul and make sweeping changes in the education system to teach the skills needed in the American workforce.

The Bill Gates Foundation is funding training for School Principals.

Effective teaching and learning methods are successful. There are standards, local, state and national. Clear high standards have to be set which align with the current curriculum.

The goal at Haverhill High is to have an international baccalaureate.

The most important component is the teacher. The teacher matters most.

Keep tuned for changes and improvements to our educational programs.

Our thanks to Raleigh Buchanan and Dr. O'Brien for their presentation.
