February 5: Raleigh Buchanan, Nancy Adams, Fred Battistini, Sally
Cerasulo-O'Rorke, Tim Coco, Greg DiBurro, Renee Harlow, Joan Hull, Ira Korinow,
Charlene LaPrel, Sheryl Meehan, Shaun Menzie, Bonnie Michaleas, Jeanine Murphy,

about 15 workers to help serve meals and clean up. Thank you.
Just as a
reminder: Rotary has reserved two tables to the Tom Vartabedian Honorary
Breakfast. Haverhill Rotary is a sponsor of the event along with other local
service organizations. We're hoping to have a very good turn out. The event will
be counted as a Rotary make-up for those of you in need of a
make-up.
Haverhill Community Television is offering studio training to
all Rotarians who would like to learn how to operate a camera and/or work in the
control room during the Rotary Television Auction. Please contact me if you'd
like to offer your service in the studio. It's fun!
Thanks to Vince

being pessimistic. It won't work anyway.
Program
Highlights
Today's speaker was Jim Michitson, part time
emergency management director for the City of Haverhill.
Emergency
management is planning for disasters - making a comprehensive emergency
management plan - which is approved by the state. It requires training the
emergency first responders of which there are 350 in the city.
There is
an annual mass casualty training exercise which is reviewed and evaluated. There
is a public education component.
The May flood was a good working example
of a catastrophic event. The outbreak of flu or other disease is a possibility.
There is also a community response team. There are emergency shelters whose
volunteers must be trained by American Red Cross.
Communications is a
problem where the communications system, the 911 number, can only handle so many
simultaneous phone calls.
The May flood experience and the response to it
was a real life training exercise.
A flu pandemic is something that
emergency management is aware of, and is training to treat. Northern Essex
College is to be the initial diagnosis center. There could be quarantines and
isolation if this were to happen.
This is an ongoing continuing process
for planning, to think about and plan for the things we don't want to think
about. Be prepared!
