President’s
Message
By Mike Hart
What a great
meeting!
We inducted
our two newest members and began work on the auction. It shows
me that as we continue to grow, we remain
dedicated to
supporting activities that will help our community.
Speaking
about activities that will help our community, I am disappointed
at
our rather tepid initial response to the new
Head Start Reading
program we have chosen to sponsor. With only about seven
members signing up from our club last week, I don’t think
enough of our members thought about the great service above self
opportunity
that this program offers us. We are being asked to read for
one hour or less once a month. I was told that the Amesbury
Rotary
Club has adopted a similar program in its community and that
they have more than 15 volunteers from their 40 or so members
who read
to the children every week. That would equate to approximately
30 of our members volunteering, but I would settle for about
20. I will be seeking more volunteers.
I want to
thank Vice President Darlene for filling in for me last week
and for doing
such a “fining” job.
Don’t
forget to try to bring in some early auction items.
Remember we
are going to have a great speaker next week so
let’s
have great attendance.
President
Mike

Head
Start Gives Kids a Better Beginning
Program Highlights
By
Joe Cleary
John Cuneo
introduced Deborah Linnette, the Head Start and Family Development
Director at Community Action Inc.
Head Start
began in 1965. It screens young children for developmental problems
prior to entering
school.
Head Start
has a literacy program which gives Rotarians an opportunity to
participate. Rotarians are invited to read
stories
to Head Start
students.
Janet Donovan
is involved with the reading program and literacy at the pre-school
level. At this level, much of
the preparation
involves reading to the children as a means of developing
literacy skills.
Volunteers
are welcome to attend a class as a reader.
There are
classrooms in Bradford, Hilldale Avenue in Haverhill and in Newburyport.
The
time commitment is only 45 minutes to an hour a month.
Our thanks
to Janet and Deborah for opening our eyes to another volunteer
service opportunity.

Gives Up His 1st Dollar...and 39 More
Here ‘n’ There

Attendance
was up when Vice President Darlene presided last week.
Any correlation?
Sheryl
Meehan’s pneumonia had
nothing (?) to do with her outstanding day in the
rain ringing the Salvation
Army bell.
The
Rotary Foundation Football promotion has lost its “Super
Bowl” luster. Wait until next year!
One
who knows that enough is enough will always have enough.
A
happy and fruitful 40 th anniversary of Don Laing’s
joining Haverhill Rotary. Happy Travels to Florida
too.
