The Nairator Rotary Club of Haverhill, Massachusetts

Welcome Mary Gale

Monday, December 11, 2006

Hi Tim,

It was wonderful to welcome Martha MacDonald and Joan Gleed from the Rotary Anns who joined us this week to promote their annual 50/50 raffle. The drawing will be held later this month.

Thanks to Jim Vanderpol for jumping in to the speaker's spot this week. We inducted Mary Gale, executive director of the Merrimack Montessori Kindergarten School as our newest club member. Mary is sponsored by Frank Novak and comes to us via a Rotary Club from Maine. As we all know, it's up to all Rotarians to recommend and sponsor new members to the club. Please take a moment to think of a colleague or business associate who you think would make a good Rotarian.

Regretfully, the Board has accepted the resignations of Joanne Sullivan, Paul Bertholdt, Ray Pelliter and Nancy Rea. We wish them well and thank them each for their years of Rotary service.

Thanks to Ken Smith for coordinating our service to the Salvation Army Kettle Drive. Check with Ken to see what time blocks are still available for our bell ringing weekend December 15 and 16. 'Tis also the season to gather mittens! Please consider donating a pair of mittens or gloves. Ken will be collecting them at our next Rotary meeting. A special thank you goes out to Haverhill Country Club waitress, Irene who donated lovely hand knitted hats to our mitten drive. Thank you Irene and all Rotarians who thought to bring in mittens this week.

Our Annual Diamond Raffle is fast approaching! The drawing for the Eternal Diamond Pendent, autographed picture of Doug Flutie and the $50.00 Saving Bond will be held at the meeting December 21. More raffle tickets are available through Chuck Marvin. Sell your tickets today and avoid a "fine" next week.

Information about the District Conference in Bermuda arrived late Thursday afternoon. Details about the conference are attached to this Nairator email.

Until next time,
President Darlene

Here 'N There

Welcome to our newest Rotarian, Mary Gale, who is the Director of the Merrimack Montessori School. Mary is a former Rotarian from Camden, Rockport, Maine.

We were graced by the presence of Martha MacDonald and Joan Gleed, Rotary Anns who are selling raffle tickets for the Rotary Ann's 50-50 raffle next week. Take a chance, help the Ann's.

Even though we won't meet here on February 1 and February 8, we can visit and makeup that week at neighboring clubs, including Exeter, Amesbury, Newburyport, Lawrence, Georgetown, Salem-Methuen. Check for days, times and locations.

Why not make the best of things? Any fool can make the worst of them. Upcoming opportunities Salvation Army Bell ringing on Saturday December 16 and the Snowbound Weekend at the Whittier Birthplace on Saturday and Sunday, December 16 and 17.

Kindness causes us both to learn and to forget many things. Don't forget to be kind!

Program Highlights

Jim Van Derpol, pinch hitting for a missing speaker, was good enough to address us on some of his experienced observations about "the big picture"; where we are, as a society and culture, and where we are going.

This is an immensely wealthy country, with some immense personal wealth. A relatively small group earns a collective $1 trillion a year.

While economic production is important, the distribution of wealth, this great immense (excessive) wealth is an equally important concern in a society such as ours.

Our 9 month educational season system is an outgrowth of the old agrarian economy educational system. It is outdated if you compare our twelve month economy with the agrarian economy of old, where summer months were spent on the farm.

Capitalism is, up to a point, a very productive tool. It is limited by its' pressure to make profits and wealth which sometimes can lead to unethical, if not illegal, activity to put profits over people.

Jim's role as an auditor put him in a position to observe much, even as auditing firms themselves would run afoul of proper ethical business practices.

Jim asked all of us to do a little more homework about the role of business in our system.

This week's MVP's are Bill Klueber and Joe Cleary. Joan Gleed also recieved her MVP award this week. She was the first to send in her money but unfortunately did not make the picture. Write those $100.00 checks and you too can be awarded the prestigious Haverhill Rotary Football!

Bernie Clohisy exchanging Rotary Christmas greetings with in Kennebunkport Square with Alan Shepard, President of Kennebunkport Rotary and Rotarian Karen Schlegel. Six of Bernie's friends bought three raffle tickets each to benefit families in need. The Rotary project was part of the Kennebunkport Christmas Prelude.
