The Nairator: Rotary Club of Haverhill, Massachusetts

Successful Kettle Drive

Tuesday, December 19, 2006

Hi Tim,

Part of settling in to our new home at the Haverhill Country Club is moving things around a bit. This week's head table, moved to the middle of the room worked out well. Thanks to all for the suggestion. As a reminder, Mary Gale will be sitting at that table welcoming all to sign her book for the next few weeks.

Saturday we had great weather for bell ringing. The sky was clear and the breeze was gentle. Thanks to all who rang the bell and contributed to the annual kettle drive for the Salvation Army. Although we don't have an "official" count yet, I know from very good authority that Rotary collected a bundle and the difference between the collections may come down to the coins!

Our Annual Diamond Raffle is fast approaching. The time is now to turn in your ticket money.

Happy Hanukah to all our Jewish members and friends.

Until next time,
President Darlene

Here 'N There

Greg DiBurro's Paul Harris "hardware" finally arrived, which hardware he can, but shouldn't, wear while fishing or snowmobiling, if he can find snow.

The podium has moved along with our President. Best wishes in your new location, in the middle of the room.

Happy Hannukah to our Jewish friends and our Rabbi's.

Though we are children only once, we can keep the child in us forever. Try it.

Despite the balmy weather, we are collecting gloves and mittens next week.

Program Highlights

Jay Robie, Director of Corporate Internship Program at Notre Dame High School in Lawrence was our speaker.

Notre Dame High School opened to 80 students in 2004 with 20 local businesses who agreed to have students work at entry level intern positions.

Students attend class 4 days a week and spend the fifth day at an internship position. The internship position allows the student to earn money towards school tuition.

There are 12 schools nationally following this model, following the original school in Chicago.

Students' contributions add value to a business and save businesses' money with the services provided by the students.

The program provides accountability because the students are responsible, mature and accountable to their sponsors, classmates and school. The students exhibit a solid work ethic.

Positions are available for students. Transportation is provided for the students.

This week's MVP's are John Hamel, Frank Novak, Chuck Traver and Bonnie Michaleas. Write those $100.00 checks and you too can be awarded the prestigious Haverhill Rotary Football!

Some habits are hard to break. Our most recent Paul Harris fellow is pictured here serving Rotarians and a way he is most accustom.
