Here’s
Another ‘Fine’ Mess...
President’s
Message
By Mike Hart
I hope everyone
survived the High Holiday, otherwise known as St. Patrick’s
Day. I particularly enjoyed it this year because it provided
me with a “fine” opportunity. This is scary, I think
a little of Joe Cleary’s wit is rubbing off on me.
It was
great to see Ron Albert back in the fold. I know that our treasurer
is very excited as Ron and his consistent travel dollars
were greatly missed.
It is the
time of the year to focus on our auction and obtaining auction
items. I have noticed that more
members have been responding
to this message recently and the auction chairs greatly appreciate
it.
I want to
congratulate Darlene for graduating from PETS (president elect
training seminar). That reminds me that we just
had our
last winter meeting and my year as president continues to
fly by. See
all of you in the Spring
President
Mike

You’re
Not Paranoid; You Are Being Watched
Program Highlights
By
Joe Cleary
Today’s
speaker was Harold Belbin of Visiting Geeks, a computer and technology
specialist and consultant.
Harold commented
on several aspects of computer life, computer purchasing, wireless
vs. wired, safety
and prevention.
Some computer
software is sophisticated enough to track your shopping and interest
activity and behavior. It is called spyware and tracks particularly
younger adults’ computer
interests.
There are
ways to protect oneself from spyware. There is no privacy on
the internet with electronic communications.
It
is in the
open and is unsecured. It is public with no legal assumption
of privacy.
A new problem
is a website called “myspace.” It
is a free website to create a page all about oneself. It
can easily
be abused and used by individuals of less than high character.
One
must be careful when using the Internet for information, for
shopping or for any other purpose. The Internet is
a wonderful invention but caution must be exercised.
Last
week, Frank Novak introduced the new and prospective Rotarian
Dr. Raleigh Buchanan, Superintendent of Schools
of the 12th
largest school system in the state (Haverhill).
Dr.
Buchanan brought with him a relatively mild winter, with very
few snow days and most big storms on the
weekend.
He has spent
his time acquainting himself with the various schools, staff
and students.
Dr. Buchanan outlined his objectives and goals for
the school system. Dr. Buchanan is working on a
virtual high
school
program and an
international baccalaureate high school program,
revival of fine arts and music programs.
Dr. Buchanan
is planning for the future for all children, staff and teachers
in the Haverhill Public
School
System.
Our thanks
to Dr. Buchanan and his plans for the future of Haverhill education.

Rotary Keeps PETS in the Club
Here ‘n’ There
By
Joe Cleary
It’s “time” for
St. Patrick’s Day and as the Irish say “God
invented time and man invented hurry. So slow down,
and enjoy.
Thanks
to Darlene Beal, we have a rare autographed Rotary
Banner, autographed by incoming Rotary International
President Bill Boyd of New Zealand.
In
this electronic age, one is known by the company one
beeps.
Welcome
back Ron Albert after a six-month leave of absence.
Do
unto yourself as you would have others do unto you.
Did
you hear about the Rotarian who entered a newspaper
pun contest by sending in ten entries in hopes of winning.
As it turned out, no pun in ten
did.
As
you go through life, you may encounter a great chasm.
Jump (with a parachute). It may
not be
as wide as you
think.
Our
Rotary pet is Vice President Darlene who is going through
Rotary boot camp at
the PETS
training
seminary
for President’s elect.
Students
in bracketology will be studying their brackets
this weekend for the upcoming
March
madness test,
of probably and odds..
