Playing
Baseball in the 1800s—the Same, but Different; Either
Way, ‘No Crying’
Program Highlights
By
Joe Cleary
Brian Sheehy,
who is associated with Essex Baseball Club and Lynn Live Oaks,
talked about baseball in the old days, the 1800s pre-modern 1880s
baseball.
Brian related
the rules differences, the equipment, uniforms that the first
baseballers played by, used and wore.
The team plays
in various New England locations, playing other local teams.
The
terminology might be different, but the basics are similar.
There are n o called balls and strikes by the umpire.
As is today,
there was “No crying in baseball” in the
1860’s.
Brian and
the team plays for the pleasure and enjoyment of the game.
There
are 8 teams in Brian’s league and 20 teams in New England,
playing throughout the season.
Keep them
in mind as the season approaches.
Beacon
Embraces Adapative Reuse
Program Highlights
By
Joe Cleary
Sally Cerasuolo
O’Rourke presented today’s program with a special
guest Pam Goodman, a principal of the Beacon Companies which
is involved in two projects in Haverhill.
One project
is Haverhill Lofts, a conversion of 32 condominiums where people
can live
and work in their unit. The loft concept
is an open space arrangement geared towards “working space” for
artists and others. Construction is expected to be completed
by year’s end.
The other
project is the Cabot House or Board of Trade building on Walnut
Street. The project should
take 12 to14 months to complete.
Marketing won’t begin until the summer. There will be
a variety of units with amenities including a fitness center.
Both
projects are promising adaptive reuses of manufacturing
buildings in downtown Haverhill. Much marketing is done through
the internet,
young professional groups and artists groups.
Beacon has acquired properties for parking, and does not
expect to encounter any parking problem.
We are fortunate
to have a company like Beacon Properties investing its name,
reputation and money in Haverhill.

A
Warm and “Fuzzy” Welcome to the Chief
Here ‘n’ There
By
Joe Cleary
We
give a warm and “fuzzy” welcome to Alan
DeNaro, the Police Chief, our newest Rotarian. Take
time to say hello to Chief DeNaro, while not looking
through your rear view mirror.
March
may come in like a lion, but it will go out like a
Rotarian, warm, sunny
and promising.
There
is no time like the pleasant, try it.
The
Haverhill Bank carried today’s fines, with
Tom, Ray and Charlene chipping in.
Happy
101st birthday to Rotary International.
V.P.
Darlene is beginning her own spring training in the “fine” department.
Do
not pray for easy lives, pray for strength to live
your life. Do not pray for task equal
to your
powers,
pray for power equal to your tasks.
If
you are ever starting a project at the bottom, remember
that you can’t fall off the floor.
Think
auction, think action..
