City
Hall Cafe wins Rotary Support
President’s
Message
By Mike Hart
I had a
great time at the City Hall Café before our meeting this
week with the other Rotarians who joined me for the dedication
of the refurbished café our club helped pay for. The special
students who benefit from this establishment were extremely grateful.
We
will soon be planning for the dedication of our new sign at
the entrance to the castle. The evidence of the good works of
the
Haverhill Rotary Club are everywhere.
The auction committee is now hard at work planning for our big
fundraiser. Please start soliciting gifts for the auction now
so we will not have to push hard at the last minute.
We should be welcoming two new members to our club soon. The
member recruitment has been very positive so far in 2006. Let’s
keep up the good work.
We will be
looking for some volunteers to do some work during the city wide
cleanup scheduled for the
morning of April 22.
The organizers
are trying to get all of the service clubs in the city to participate.
I will bring this up again at our next meeting.
President

Vanderpol
Offers Perspective on Events
Program Highlights
By
Joe Cleary
Jim Vanderpol
took the time to reflect and address us on the state of the Union.
Jim’s perspective is based in part on his experience in fighting
the Gestapo as part of the Dutch Resistance.
He reflected
on the world’s condition, particularly in Europe,
and the post war reconstruction after World War I which contributed
to World War II, and World War II which was aided by the Marshall
Plan in the reconstruction of Europe.
Jim has been
interested in governance and politics and political leadership,
on the world,
national state and local levels.
The gap between
the rich countries and peoples of the world and the poor countries
and peoples of
the world is pronounced
and
growing.
The primary
problems of the pool countries are always health and mortality
problems. Poor countries are primarily unhealthy
countries.
Poverty and disease go hand in hand. There are countries
in this day where the residents live at a subsistence level.
Jim
raised some serious questions and concerns that we should all
consider. What role can each of us, as citizens
and as
Rotarians play?

Congrats
to Charlie on His 11th Rotary Year
Here ‘n’ There
By

Local
reaction to Adam Vinatieri’s leaving the Patriots, “can’t
kick.”
Happy
11th Anniversary of Rotary Membership to Charlie Boule,
a date near and dear to his heart.
Cooperation
is doing with a smile what you have to do anyway.
Plan
ahead – Haverhill cleanup on April 22, Rebuilding
Together on April 29, both opportunities may require
some elbow grease and will pay much satisfaction.
The
two hardest things to handle in life are failure
and success.
