Our thoughts and prayers are with George Winfield and his family
on his passing on March 31st. George was one of three anchors of
this club as Secretary and Past President along with Bill Letoile
and Leo Chareth. George was a World War II veteran and retired
medical technician. He was elected to the Haverhill City Council in
1969 and 1971. During these two terms he served as council
president.

upcoming retirement.
Welcome back to Don Laing and best wishes for the recovery of his

Program Highlights
Vin Bonanno presented a representative of Covanta Energy
concerning their fluorescent bulb collection disposal program. There
is a law that outlines the written fluorescent bulb collection plan.
Covanta has an outreach program and has 4 dates when businesses can
bring in their own fluorescent bulbs. Mercury pollution is a
problem. Covanta has taken steps to collect Mercury products,
batteries, thermometers, blood pressure cups and other items. Vin's
speaker is costing him some fine money though.

Our Tim Coco was our speaker on March 29th. The station WHAV was
started 60 years ago this year. Tim began there in 1978 and has been
connected with it ever since. The Haverhill Gazette put WHAV on the
air in 1947. It was initially going to be an FM radio station. The
FM radio band turned out to be a television band so WHAV went
AM. Haverhill architect Clint Goodwin designed the
building. In 1954, the station had only Ed Johnson and Bud Smith
as employees. Tim had selected cuts of radio broadcasts from the
past that brought back some great memories.
