Service Above Self

Members of Haverhill Rotary serving community meals at the
Haverhill Citizens Center on April 30th.
May 1, 2007

Hi Tim, Mid May has arrived and the count down to the next
Rotary year has begun! Both our club installation and the district
installation will be held on the same date - June 28th. We'll hold
our club installation during our regular luncheon meeting at the
Haverhill Country Club. Please invite your friends and family if
you'd like. The district installation is the same evening beginning
at 6pm at the Danversport Yacht Club. So far we have about 8 - 10
people from Haverhill attending. If you'd like to attend, please see
Bill Klueber.
Thank you Mary Gale for Leading the Way to
Rotary Youth Exchange! Mary is currently looking for families who'd
like to learn more about hosting a Rotary Youth Exchange student.
Please contact Mary or me if you or someone you know would like to
learn more about what is involved. The host family does not have to
be a Rotary family. So, if you have a neighbor or friend who is
interested, please let us know!
There are many ways to be
involved in the Youth Exchange program besides being a host family.
This is going to be a tremendous experience for Haverhill Rotary. If
you are interested in getting involved, please contact me or Mary.
Until next time, Darlene
Here 'N There

Why do we sing "Take me Out to the Ballgame" when we're already
there?
Welcome back to John Albert, Rotarian of the past, as
a guest of Dr Julian Rich.
Welcome back to our Greeter, Red
Sox #1 Fan and Past President, Dick Emerson, after a winter's stay
in Florida.
Planning ahead - President elect Vin and Kathy
Bresnahan are working on a fund raising project in the Fall at
Tattersall Farm. Volunteers needed - please offer your time and
availability.
Events ahead - Boy Scout Distinguished Citizen
Award Dinner, Wednesday, May 16th; Community Action Wine Tasting on
May 17th; No Place for Hate Multi-Cultural Pot Luck Peace Dinner
Sponsored by Greater Haverhill Civil Rights Commission on Wednesday,
May 30th at Pentucket Bank's Community Room.
To give real
service you must add something which cannot be bought or measured
with money and that is sincerity and integrity. - Donald A. Adams,
Rotarian and business leader.
Can you envision any of our
Rotarian's visages on the new downtown murals. It isn't hard to do
and a donation to the mural project may make it
possible.
There were some fishermen missing at last week's
meeting who may have some "Is it the truth" fish stories next
week.
Program Highlights
Bonnie
Michaelas introduced David Pulzetti and his wife, Kay Spofford - two
community meals "regulars" who have been doing volunteer missionary
work in Nicaragua. They have recently returned from Nicaragua as
part of the Mission to the Americas Ministries.
David and Kay
are focused on a vocational training center for welding skills. Dave
is a self-taught welder.
Dave lives in the city of Chinandega
- 60,000 residents. He uses a bicycle for transportation, living
accommodations and conditions vary in the country and in the
city.
Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Western
hemisphere next to Haiti. There is very high unemployment. Education
is not always available for all children because of
cost.
Supplies, equipment and materials are not easy to come
by due to availability and cost.
Our thanks to Dave and Kay
for their efforts.
The previous week's guest was Gautier
Brunet, who is studying aerospace engineering at MIT. He is studying
a subject he loves but the scholarship also gives him the
opportunity to study the American Culture. He is in the first year
of a 2 year Master's Degree program at MIT. He owes this priceless
opportunity to the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship
Program.
Following Gautier's presentation, we changed topics
as Tim Jordan introduced Lynn Murphy, who is involved with Team
Haverhill, to talk about the LEAP Haverhill Arts Program. One
endeavor is a mural project with artist Alan Pearsall, a
muralist.
The plan is to paint some historical murals in
boarded up windows in the walkway between the Tap and the River's
Edge Park on Washington Street. The murals will be about 7 feet by 3
feet. The murals will educate and entertain, and for the right price
you might have the face or faces of your choice in a
mural.
The public arts project is part of Team Haverhill's
vision for a lively vibrant downtown. Participate and enjoy
it.

In the center is first grade teacher Mrs Susan Danforth. Don
Beaton and Bernie Clohisy as guests. Moneys raised at the
Rotary Auction were donated in memory of Jean Clohisy who was the
first grade teacher at the Bagnall School in Groveland.
