President’s Message

Fellow Rotarians,

Last week the passing of long time friend and Rotarian, Jim Vanderpol saddened us as his wry wit and easy smile will be missing from our Thursday gatherings. Jim had a remarkable life journey, beginning in Amsterdam and ultimately propelling a fifteen-year-old boy into a world of terror and brutality that would last five years. He emigrated to America where he courted and married Carol, a loving partnership that unwaveringly stood the test of time.  Jim earned his CPA and worked for Coopers & Lybrand and Becton Dickinson but he hardly fit the stereotype of accountant or businessman. His down to earth personality took him to high school classrooms to talk about his wartime experiences of Gestapo raids and a survivor’s flight from Nazi occupied Netherlands. And he wrote a book to chronicle it all. But Jim’s finest quality was the gentleness of his soul. He could charm you with his wit, and humor you with his self-deprecating yarns. He could look you in the eye and make you believe in humanity. So long good friend, we leave you in peace.
