President’s Message

Fellow Rotarians,

Hanukkah is an eight day holiday beginning at sundown December 24 and it will therefore coincide with Christmas as it has on rare occasions.  Jews all over the world will be lighting the first Hanukkah candles on Christmas Eve, and will continue to light the menorah (plus Shabbat candles) through New Year’s Eve, December 31st. Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, and ring in the New Year!

Haverhill History Minute: The first Trans-Atlantic telephone message from Haverhill, Mass. to London, England was made on December 22, 1926. Mr. Robert L. Wright, publisher of the Haverhill Gazette talked by telephone with the Associated Press in London, and the Mayor Fred D. McGregor, extended his greetings to the Lord Mayor of London: Haverhill time 11:40 a.m., London time 4:40 p.m.

We've come a long way Baby!

Last week:

• Evan filled in admirably when our guest speaker failed to appear. We learned some of the finer points of tennis at Cedardale and also that something called pickle ball is gaining popularity as a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. Two, three, or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, similar to a whiffle ball, over a net.

• Four members of the Haverhill High School Interact Club were surprise guests and warmly received with Gretchen acting as our hostess.

• We wished Nicole a Happy Birthday with cake and song

• Anniversaries: Nicole 2, Matt 8, Jered 5, and Buddy 15 years

• Stacey announced our winter/spring event: Karaoke Night March 3, 2017. Watch this space for more details to come!!!

Happy $$$:

Jeannie promptly to put an end to Art’s woeful puns
Harry fined himself because he had to scrape his windshield this morning
Nicole because she is having a fab birthday week
Allison because she wishes everyone the Happiest of Holidays
Gretchen because she thinks Melissa is a great bartender
Art was happy for Mike Reilly’s friendly appearance before his annual tax season disappearance.

Mike held the winning number but left the burgeoning jackpot intact.

This week (our last meeting before the year):

• Bring your $5s, $10s and $20s because we will pass the hat this year as for a collection as an expression of our appreciation to Barbara and the wait staff for all of the attentive service that we are given throughout the year.  As the Donna Summer song goes: “she works hard for the money” so let’s respond with a generous spirit.

• Stacey says: Remember to wear your “Ugly Christmas Sweater” and you just might win a prize.

• District Governor and PP Sheryl Meehan will be making an official visit to our fair Club so let’s plan to give her a warm Hillie welcome.

• Sign up for Ringing the Bell for the Salvation Army – Saturday December 17. Art has the list of time slots from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or volunteer on line by emailing him at

• Santa and his eight tiny reindeer.
