President’s Message

Fellow Rotarians,

If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman. ~Margaret Thatcher

It was 30 years ago that Rotary issued a policy statement that any Rotary club in the United States could admit qualified women into membership. Since that time we have had many notable Rotarians from the distaff side. Val Veasey served as our first female president in 1999-2000. Four more women have led the club since, and three in the wings for a trifecta. I’m sure glad we finally got it right because I cannot imagine Rotary without these distinguished ladies past and present.

Doppelgänger Week, the first week of February, starting on Sunday and ending on Saturday, is an internet meme/game whereby users of social networking websites change their profile pictures to that of celebrities, athletes, historical figures, or friends with whom they share appearance traits. Mine has been duly altered.

It is nice to be gathering on the south side of the river this week and next. Bradford has always fit naturally into Haverhill but it was not until 1897 that the two towns were officially joined. Fun fact: Bradford remains the only town in the state of Massachusetts to be annexed to a neighboring city other than Boston.

The Whittier Birthplace will sponsor Snow Bound Weekend February 11-12. Rotarians who wish to see their club president play the part of  “father” in the Snow Bound reenactment won’t want to miss this biennial event at the Birthplace.

A Rotary after Dark event seems like a great way to spread a little mid-winter cheer and at the same time introduce some civic minded, fun loving, men and women of good character to our club. Stay tuned for more details on this.

First Landing Park on Water Street across from the old burial ground is the historic site where Haverhill’s settlers first set foot upon the place they called Pentucket. It bears a Rotary Club sign, a vestige of our club’s joint beautification project with the city to restore the mini-park to its welcoming prominence back in the 70s.  Unfortunately it has begun to show signs of neglect and we will contact Brightside to explore a mutual effort to restore this small pastoral park to its quiet loveliness.

The 2017 Polar Plunge is Saturday February 4th - Be there by 11:15 at Good Harbor Beach on Thatcher Road in Gloucester - Post Plunge Party at Harry’s lovely home in Rockport. Question: Will Michel finally take the plunge?

The Haverhill Country Club will be closed for the month of February and our interim meeting places are:

This week:    The Bradford Country Club

Feb. 9              Whittier Rehab – Ward Hill

Feb. 16           Poet’s Inn – Whittier Vo-Tech (11:30 a.m. start)

Feb. 23           Northern Essex Community College

Last week’s attendance was at a low point for the 2016 -17 year; just 25 members (40%) Lets go Rotarians!!!

Happy $$$:

Jim Smith because he is closing on his new home

Rick Atwood: daughter (in-law?) gave birth to twins

Dick Sundell: because our below average attendance was still better than the Kiwanians!

Allison Field for her extended weekend in Florida

Ira: Happy to be visiting his children in NYC

Greg Stark: Happy to be back (…and so are we!)

Harry because Rockport survived the Nor’easter.

Steve Goddu: a preemptive strike on Art’s puns.

Art: for Rotarians present and also for those who try, but cannot always attend meetings week in and week out.

Nancy Montville, Legal Shield. Nancy gave us an informative talk on identity theft and what you should do to guard against it.

Greg DiBurro had the winning number but walked away with a mere consolation prize. The jackpot is now well over $600.

This week’s speaker: Former NFL Linebacker Russ Cook
