January 13, 2009

Congratulations to the entire Board of Directors upon your election; especially to Ira Korinow who will assume the Presidency in July. Welcome to Chuck Marvin as the newest member of the Board.
Some of you no doubt remember the Gates Foundation $100MM challenge to Rotary to help knock down polio in the four countries where it is still most active, as well as in other parts of the world where it still exists in very small numbers. The goal for each club over the three years starting this 2008-2009 Rotary year is $1000. District Governor Tom Elliott gave each club a pillowcase in which periodically to collect pocket change towards this goal. We are behind in using the pillowcase to collect towards the goal. In the course of our sampling two other sites and then moving to Michael's, our pillowcase disappeared for a time. It will be back this week. Please give as generously as you can. As each of us treasures good health, we can surely understand the impact of eliminating polio from the lives of others.
Speaking of the move to Michael's, anyone know where the Haverhill Rotary road sign is that used to be out on River Street during our term at Pat's Beef House, then moved with us up to the turn into HCC at the corner of North Ave and Brickett Lane? We should get it back out on River Street.
District 7930 is striving to "Make Dreams Real" by increasing Rotary awareness. The District has begun advertising on Comcast with thirty second spots below in each town in which there is a Club. Check 'em out on the home page of the District website: http://www.rotary7930.org/
And speaking of Rotary awareness, look for a ceremony later this month on a Thursday afternoon at Haverhill High School shortly after our meeting. We will memorialize the official chartering this past October of the Interact Club of Haverhill High School, bringing Rotary's goals and activities to the youth of Haverhill. District Governor Tom Elliott and District Interact Committee Chairman Roger Bell will attend if possible. I hope you might join us as well.
Have you been enjoying Fred MacDonald's "column" in the Nairator? I have. Thanks, Fred! Everyone else is invited to add to the Nairator. Contact Editor Steve Goddu, who we also thank for week in and week out putting together this newsletter and distributing it.
See you Thursday!

Burt Alter: Haverhill Jazz Connections
Just about every Sunday evening I listen to Ray Smith's Jazz Decades program on WBGH radio at 89.7 FM. It's on from 7:00 PM until 8:00 PM. His program features Traditional and Dixieland Jazz. He plays and gives background information about the selections which are from the twenties and thirties.
My work with business telephone systems used to take me to many offices in the Merrimack Valley and Southern New Hampshire areas. Along the way I had become acquainted with Burt Alter of Haverhill, Massachusetts. He was associated with a Newburyport office equipment and supplies company. Many times our paths would cross as we were at one the area businesses.
We found that we both had a liking for Traditional and Dixieland Jazz and of course this would be one of our discussion topics when we might meet.
One day he asked if I was familiar with ³Do You Know What It Means To Miss New Orleans?² I told him that I surely was and that it was among my favorites. He then told me that it was written by his Uncle Louis Alter from Haverhill. Wow I thought, what a nice detail to know.
I' sorry to say that Burt has gone to heaven now, but I still think of him and miss him.
