For over a year now, fellow Haverhill Rotarian Phil Brown has been working hard with students to bring Rotary to Haverhill High School in the form of weekly Interact meetings. This Thursday at 2:15 PM at Haverhill High, we will commemorate the official chartering of the Interact Club of Haverhill High School.
I hope every member of the club can and will take the extra hour total to join the students, Phil, District and School representatives in this official recognition.
Colin, Mike and Molly are a few of the students with whom Phil is working who have come to our Thursday lunch meetings, not to mention Exchange students Ana and Luca. Through Interact, students learn about Rotary's principles, put them into action through community service, share fellowship through their service projects and other fun activities and learn about other countries and cultures through their own and foreign exchange students. This year they have been fundraising to help local food banks struggling to meet increased need in the face of the down economy as well as to support their club activities.
As Ira reminded us from time to time last year, membership matters. Interact builds early relationships and awareness that help build character. Positive Interact membership experiences may develop into future Rotary membership and support.
Let's give Phil and the kids the very same Haverhill Rotary welcome and encouragement that we would give them were they to come and speak to us. This Thursday, after our meeting, go to the High School Main Office, 137 Monument Street, Haverhill, and they will guide us from there to the meeting room.
See you Thursday!
John

Do You Remember Donald Freeman?
When I was at New England Telephone I was the Supervisor of the Business Telephone
Services group. Adjoining my office was the Supervisor of Residential Telephone Services group. His name was Eddie Randall. (He was a Kiwanian). He retired when I was still at New England Telephone.
I later left the telephone company when the government broke up the Bell System and
began a company for commercial telephone services.
In 1983 we were the low bidder for the placing of telephone wires and cables at the new
Hale Hospital being built in the Riverside area of Haverhill, Massachusetts. We were going to need more technicians for about three months. Eddie Randall was a neighbor of the Freemans. I called him and asked him if he would help us on the hospital job. We needed another person to watch the wire reels on the racks in the corridors as the cables and wires were spinning out.
Mr. Freeman was a member of the Haverhill Rotary Club. Many of you would remember him. He told me that one day he walked over to visit Eddie near his house and asked him where he was going every morning so early. He said that Eddie puffed up and said: "Aw, they pulled me out of retirement and I'm on a job at the new hospital."
I was so pleased to hear that story from Mr. Freeman and so glad that I asked Eddie to help us.
