Richard H. Emerson 1929-2009
It is with great sadness and a sense of loss that we morn the passing of Dick Emerson. As our club greeter he welcomed us all to Thursday's meetings during the warm weather months. Dick was president of the club in 1973-1974 and named a Paul Harris Fellow in 1999. The consummate Red Sox fan, Dick never missed a game, home or away, for the past many years. He is captured above by an AP photographer resting his eyes during a rainy game.
Richard H. Emerson, 80, of Haverhill, passed away Monday morning at the VA Medical Center, Brockton. Calling hours will be at the Dole, Childs and Shaw Funeral Home at 148 Main Street in Haverhill across from city hall Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. Rotarians will meet as a group to pay their respects together at 5:00 PM outside of the funeral home. The funeral will be on Saturday at 10:00 AM at the First Church of Christ, 10 Church Street in Bradford.
President's Message

Dear Rotarians,
Thank you all for putting up with my leading God Bless America in the absence of a piano. I have been told that the piano should return next week so both Chandler and Fred will be leading us in song!
Thank you to John Cuneo for asking for the debriefing on the Duck Regatta. If you were not at the October 15th meeting or if there is something you now remember but forgot to mention in your table's discussion, feel free to let me or any Board member know.
If you were at the meeting, you also saw that Game, Inc. sent us a "birthday card." It said "Happy 1st Birthday Haverhill Rotary - 1st Annual Duck Regatta - September 12, 2009." I think if you ask John, Sheryl, Diane or many other club members, they will say they feel like they aged more than a year while preparing for our first Duck Regatta! So, when are we beginning to get ready for the 2nd Annual Duck Regatta? Keep tuned!
We are close to getting the final figures on the Duck Race including the amounts earned by the various non-profit teams. At our October meeting the other night, the Board of Directors is planning on distributing the grants to the dozens of non-profit organizations that we support soon after we have the final figures. A notice was sent earlier this year asking that non-profits fill out a Grant Request Form each year. A form was sent to each of the non-profits that we have supported in the past but not very many have been filled out and returned. The form can be found on the Haverhill Rotary website and then printed. Go to: HaverhillRotary.com and then click on "Charitable" at the top of the page. After arriving at the new page, click on "Grant Request Form" in the second paragraph. Remember: To receive a grant, a form must be filled out and returned to Haverhill Rotary at a Thursday meeting or mailed to Haverhill Rotary Club, P. O. Box 808, Haverhill, MA 01831. The deadline is November 15, 2009. We look forward to doing very soon what Rotary is all about: serving others in our community and helping to make our world a better place.
Next week we will have some very special guests - students now participating on the Friends Forever program. There will be four or five different groups of teens on the program this year. Most are Catholics and Protestants from Northern Ireland. (Last year a group from Northern Ireland visited our club.) There will also be one group of Jewish and Moslem students from Israel and that is the group that will be visiting us next week. There will be 5 from the Comprehensive High School in the Arab village of Ein Mahil which is located in the Galilee just outside Nazareth (in the northern part of the country) and there will be 5 students from the Maale Shacharut Regional High School in the Negev (southern part of the country). A teacher from each school will be traveling with them along with an American guide and driver. While I haven't visited the Jewish high school in the Negev, I have visited the Arab high school in Ein Mahil. I hope you look forward, as I do, to welcoming these young people and their teachers to Haverhill Rotary next week.
See you on Thursday.
Rotarily Yours,
Ira
