President's Message

Dear Rotarians,

Since I last wrote a message, we have had two tremendous programs. The first came to us from Friends Forever, whose office is located in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. In past years, we have hosted at our meeting a group from Northern Ireland. This year, however, we were privileged to host the only group on the Friends Forever program from Israel.

Friends Forever began as a project of the Portsmouth Rotary Club 23 years ago. Started by Portsmouth Rotarian Bob Raiche in 1986 while serving as the Executive Director of the Seacoast YMCA, its purpose was to help build peace through a grassroots effort by bringing Protestant and Catholic teens to the seacoast area of New Hampshire and the North Shore of Boston for two weeks being together, speaking to groups like Rotary about their lives in Northern Ireland and, most importantly, getting to know each other and realizing they all share the same interests, goals and dreams. A few years after it began, Friends Forever began to expand its horizons by bringing a group of Arabs and Jews from Israel for the same kind of experience. After many years of working with the YMCA in Jerusalem, Friends Forever forged a new and productive relationship with a group called Common Paths which unites the Comprehensive High School in Ein Mahil, an Arab village outside Nazareth in the Galilee, and the Maaleh Shacharut Regional High School in the Arava Desert in southern Israel.

I have served on the Friends Forever Board of Directors for almost two years and had the opportunity to help lay the groundwork for Common Paths' participation in Friends Forever for the first time when I visited Ein Mahil while visiting my son who was studying in Tel Aviv. From visiting the Arab village, something somewhat unusual for an American Jew to do, sprang forth a wonderful relationship with Friends Forever as well as a personal friendship between me and some of the Arab teachers and the school principal. (I even had the opportunity to be the guest speaker at the Nazareth Rotary Club that year, a unique experience in which I spoke Hebrew to the club comprised of only Christians and Moslems!)

Friends Forever this year brought four groups of teens from Northern Ireland and one group from Israel. The teens from Israel that visited us demonstrated what a shared experience can do to push forward the difficult process of creating friendship in a part of the world in desperate need of peace. And it all started with Rotary!

The second program welcomed Garin Veris, the new Director of Athletics for the Haverhill Public Schools. Many recognized his name. Garin played Defensive End for the New England Patriots for seven years from 1985-1991 (including the 1985 season Super Bowl). Although he didnšt mention it, Garin is the Patriots' third all-time leader in sacks. Garin, who moved to Haverhill to assume his new position in the School Department, spoke about his philosophy and plans that he is in the process of establishing for the young people of our city. Haverhill is certainly blessed to have such a wonderful athlete and decent human being to be a role model for our young people and guide our children during the formidable years of growing up! Thank you, Superintendent Raleigh, for helping to bring Garin to Haverhill and for bringing him as a speaker to our club.

I will be away from Rotary this week (I already hear the sigh of relief!) while I attend the Biennial Convention of my synagogue's movement in Toronto. I know that Julian will do a fabulous, if not FINE, job in presiding over the meeting. See you all on November 12th.

Rotarily Yours,

Ira

Woolworth Building Haverhill, Mass.

I wish that something good would become of the old Woolworth Building at White's Comer in Haverhill, Mass. It has sat on one comer of an otherwise attractive intersection for how many years now? What would I like to see?
Perhaps a two story red brick office building at the back of the lot. Built with a cellar with access from inside the building as well as from Wall street in the rear. Parking on the lot between the building and Merrimack Street, with low growing shrubs strategically placed. Vehicle entrance / exit from the alley off Merrimack Street. Offices with a view of the Merrimack River. Come on someone build it.
