Haverhill Boy's Club

The Haverhill Boys Club was established in the year 1900 as one of the original 53 clubs in the country who formed the national organization of Federated Boys Clubs. In 1957 the name of the national organization was changed to Boys Clubs of America and later became Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Today there are more than 4,000 clubs serving more than three million youth. This Thursday board members Dan Rorke, Bob Wysocki, Art Morrow and executive director Brian Theirrien will speak to us about...

December 16, 2008

This Thursday is our last meeting of the year. I hope you will make it!

Calling all Past Presidents! OK, we've had two tries at this meeting. The third time's the charm right? Please help it be so! Please be there for the meeting after our regular meeting and allow enough time to do the business at hand.

What do the Past Presidents do at this meeting, newer members might ask. Well, not being a Past President, I'm not exactly sure, but one of my tasks as current President is to find out. A tradition is that I attend this meeting to learn "the drill," so as the immediate Past President next year I'll know exactly what to do. I'll let you know for sure in the future, but I think the Immediate Past President calls the meeting to order and the group does two things. First, the Past Presidents propose and select candidates for the next new member of the Club's Board of Directors. After the meeting, the top candidate is asked if they will serve. If that person agrees they become the next Director and start their passage towards learning more and more about Rotary and Club business and eventually in six or so years becoming the Club President if everything goes well. Second, the Past Presidents elect the remaining members of the Board and its Officers. This will confirm who will be the Club President in July 2009.

Why is it important? Rotary has a long deliberate and thoughtful cycle to prepare club leadership. It really begins when a person becomes a director on the Club Board. Gradually tasks are rotated over a period of about six years, where directors are supposed to learn by coordinating one year each of club activities in the four avenues of service: club, vocational, community and international service. From January of each year, the President-elect then gets a six month crash course with other president-elects in the District as well as from neighboring Districts to prepare and plan for his or her year as President. So confirmation of the President-elect, bringing onto the Board a likely future president of the Club and moving directors along on their paths of club service are critical to the current strength and future leadership of the Club.

I hope you survived the ice storm all right. Please let us know if club members can help out. I know some members are still waiting for the restoration of their power and / or heat. It sure helps you know some things for which you can be thankful!

It was great to see John Jameson's brother at this past week's meeting; and to see our Haverhill High School Interact youth, Colin David and Molly Gibbs. Mary Johnson Lally, we will miss you and hope you will come a few more times to the club before you truly depart. We look forward to meeting your successor, Carol Verny.

Make sure before you leave the meeting that you know what date, time and place you are slated to ring the Salvation Army bell this coming weekend! If you can't make Thursday's meeting, ask a fellow member to confirm your responsibility for you.

Finally, please try to be on time for the meeting! We are working with the staff of Michael's to serve lunch in a timely fashion, but they cannot serve until members arrive and at least clearly indicate where they are sitting. Also, if you arrive late, please try to be patient with your server. S/he is working hard to serve the entire group, and if you are late, you will be served late. It's only fair.

See you Thursday!

John

Big Boy's Don't Cry

Before I became a supervisor at the telephone company I was a telephone installer. One day in April 1956 I was sent to 1600 Osgood Street in North Andover, Massachusetts where a new plant for the Western Electric Company was being built. Although there were phones in the trailers and construction buildings there were none inside the new building being constructed.

Thinking this to be noteworthy I attached a dated tag to the black rotary dial phone that I had just installed, noting it as the first telephone installed in this building, April 1956. Quite a few years later I received a call from one of the Engineers at Western Electric. He told me that the first telephone installed at their plant had been removed because it was no longer compatible with their new switchboard. He went on to tell me that they had sent it out and had it attached to a walnut plaque. He asked me to come to the plant and see the first telephone now on the plaque.

I went to his office and he showed me the plaque and asked what I thought of it. I noticed that the word FIRST (telephone) had been misspelled. It was spelled FRIST on the little nameplate. He told me that the company had spent $350.00 to have the plaque made.

When I pointed out the spelling error to him I thought that I was going to see grown man cry.
