Quacky on Parade
December 2, 2008

No meeting last week. I hope you had a great time with your family and friends!
What a great showing at Community Meals last Monday night! Thank you so much! Enough club members and other helpers showed to be sure we could serve everyone with genuine care. A few additional members showed and there were enough members present that these "extras" could be sure there was enough help and then go on their way, which is great! Much better that than not enough help and the ensuing chaos or volunteers too rushed to show the kind of care for people who have to come to Community Meals for their dinner. It was also a special meal in terms of being dedicated to the memory of Don Beaton and Linda Sundell.
Reminder: All Past Haverhill Rotary Club Presidents! The special Annual Meeting of all Past Presidents will occur @ 1:30 PM sharp, right after our next lunch, Thursday, Dec. 4th. Please set aside the time to be there to elect next year's officers and a new Director for the Board.
There are lots more opportunities for service this month. This Sunday afternoon, the Club will have a table at the Christmas Stroll to promote the club, Rotary and to continue to spread the word about our duck race fundraiser. Can you volunteer an hour or more to "person" the booth? We hope to provide hot chocolate to "Strollers." We're also looking for some volunteers to wear the Quacky costume. Please let me know. The Stroll runs from 2 pm to 6 pm and there is some set-up and take down time before and after.
The District Youth Exchange Program could also use a club volunteer or two this Sunday afternoon, the 7th. The group, most likely including our student, Ana, from Georgia, will be going to Boston in the afternoon. They will start on the Commons, go to a performance of the Blue Man Group at about 2 and end at about 8:30 after dinner. Might you and your spouse or best friend be interested in some great theater mixed with international youths from around the District? Let Mary Gale or I know...
Please remember also to save some time to volunteer for bell ringing for the Salvation Army the weekend of Dec. 20th. Ken Smith will have sign-up sheets at our lunch this week.
Don't forget "Every Rotarian Every Year" when thinking about your charities this season. So much of what we do, and of what we see Rotary do across the world, would not be possible without our gifts to Rotary International.
Reminder: we do not meet if school is cancelled in Haverhill due to bad weather. If school opening is just delayed a few hours, we will still meet at 12:15.
See you Thursday!
John

Mittens and Gloves

We are still collecting gloves, mittens and hats for children and youth of all ages. Please bring your donation to the next Rotary meetings. Ken Smith will take care of getting them to this year's Christmas Castle run by the Salvation Army.
Who Has Season Tickets to the Celtics?

If you know the answer please ask that person for some tickets for our raffle. Make a call today and let Julian Rich or Chuck Marvin know what you can get your hands on. This project will benefit Haverhill Charities.

Ring the Bell for Nick
I also used to eat at Nick's Purity Diner on River Street in Haverhill, Massachusetts.
Nick was pretty crabby.
One day after having lunch there I was at the register to pay.
The place was busy with many shoe shop people and others from nearby businesses.
So I thought that it would be good time to ring Nick's bell.
We knew each other pretty well.
So holding back the money until I had said what I planned to say which was:
"Nick, in a fine establishment such as this, do you have a motto or a slogan ?"
"Yeah", he said.
"Eat, pay and get the hell out."
So dear reader, would you like to have me for a friend at your business?
Don't forget to sign up and ring the bell for Saint Nick. See Ken Smith
