Haverhill Rotary At Work

In an effort to maximize donations during these difficult financial times Haverhill Rotary club rang the bell for the Salvation Army's Kettle Drive throughout Haverhill on Friday and Saturday December 19th & 20th.

December 23, 2008

Remember, no meeting this week! Anyone found on their way to Michael's this Thursday...well, we won't go there (so to speak?!). Thanks so much to the Boys and Girls Club representatives for their presentation at this past Thursday's meeting and especially for the memorabilia from the club's beginnings, including its original charter over 90 years ago!

Thank you so much to so many club members who helped ring the bell for the Salvation Army this past weekend! Wow, it was cold! Hopefully that inspired many to give. It's a great way to help the less fortunate. We'll see which service club came out on top in January!

Last week the Past Presidents voted to appoint a new Director to the Club's Board of Directors for the coming Rotary year that begins July 1, 2009. That person, as well as the entire slate of Officers and Directors for the coming year, will be announced at our next meeting, the first week in January.

It's the New Year coming right up. Looking for a clear, defined way to get involved on behalf of Rotary? I mentioned a RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) District Kickoff event early in January. Through RYLA, we seek to identify, recognize and reward two area high school juniors who show promise of leadership with an inspiring weekend of youth development activities among their peers from other communities at Camp Rotary in Boxford. Here are the details of the meeting: Sat. January 3rd, from 10 AM - 12:30 PM at the Danversport Yacht Club. The District is seeking two reps from each club. If you've not been involved with RYLA in the past, find out what you have been missing. If you have, thank you so much and at this meeting you can find out what's new for this year and help get other clubs excited about the program. Please rsvp to me jcuneo@communityactioninc.org and to ryla7930@yahoo.com if you are going.

Many of you know that I am leading a Group Study Exchange team of four young professionals from our District to Johannesburg South Africa from February 28 - March 28. We have been busy preparing. Meanwhile, a similar team of four young professionals and their leader from South Africa are planning to come here to our district from April 18th, 2009 to May 16th. Their four-week visit will include a comprehensive cultural and vocational experience throughout our district. The District's GSE Committee is looking for Rotarians from all areas in our district to help ensure our international visitors are welcomed with Rotary fellowship, and that they experience professional vocations and cultural experiences that meet their individual needs and expectations. If you are interested in welcoming one or more South African guests into your home for a week, and/or if you know of contacts or have related vocational experiences, please contact me, our Area Coordinator Christyne Vachon 310-854-9748 (Ipswich Club) or the District GSE Chair Joanne Travers 978-312-1200 (Topsfield Club).

Here are the vocational interests of each of the four GSE Inbound Team members:
University Programs in music, journalism, chemical engineering
Retail Media
News Centers and Organizations
Acoustic and Music Engineering Firms
Retail and Import Establishments

The Team Leader is a Forensic Architect who deals with arbitrations and alternative dispute resolution in the construction industry.

Year end is also tax time. Please remember the "Every Rotarian Every Year" campaign and donate a hundred dollars or whatever you can afford to Rotary International. RI does great work, whether locally through its support and opportunities for our club and community or internationally through programs like group study/youth exchange, scholarships, eradicating polio, and correcting cleft palates. Contact Ken Smith or Ron Albert with your donation.

Finally, thank you so much for your support of me as your Club President and of the rest of the Board over the past six months. It's been a great time with lots going on, a new meeting place and so much more in store for the next six months!

See you in 2009. May we all experience greater peace, good health, prosperity and good will in the New Year!

John

Anyone Have a Pen?

After the government broke up the Bell System we began a company for the sales and service of business telephone systems. When it was still called the Haverhill Cooperative Bank we received a request for a service call.

They had an unusual condition where calls would only come in on the first two lines at some times. All other lines were then not getting any calls. The condition would come and go without warning.

The telephone company had checked and advised that it was not a problem with their lines. A.T.&T. had checked the switchboard and said that they were OK. Lines from the telephone company enter the building and tenninate in a device called the interface point.

The connection in this device is passed through using metallic bridging clips and then on to the switchboard. It was at this point that we determined that the trouble would be. It was removal and examination of the bridging clips showed that one of these clips lacked tension to make a reliable connection every time. We placed new clips and all calls began to pass through.

Bank President Tom Faulkner had been with me during this time and was pleased that the problem was solved. He instructed me to send a bill to the bank. I suggested that because it was a quick fix that there would be no bill.

Looking back, I should have asked for a bank pen.
