President's Message

Dear Rotarians,

As we heard last week from folks involved with Hope and Health for Rwanda and IMEC (the International Medical Equipment Collaborative), there is much to be done to improve health care and living conditions in many parts of the world. Although much of our efforts now are concentrated on helping the people of Haiti, we mustn't forget other parts of the world are in need of "repair."

We had another successful day at the Mall at Rockingham Park on Sunday staffing the Shelter Box display. We did well, considering it was Super Bowl Sunday we collected over $640 which when combined with the $371 we collected a week earlier at the mall, we are able to send another Shelter Box. Thanks to the Rotarians who volunteered at the mall: In addition to myself, Harry Korsland, Michael Quinn, Bonnie Michaleas, Frank Novak, Phil Brown, Michel Van Ravestayn and several Interact students from Haverhill High School could be seen outside the Apple Store pitching Shelter Boxes. At our meeting on Thursday this week, Chuck Traver will update us on how many Shelter Boxes we have sent as a club.

Chuck also wrote a sample letter you can use to solicit contributions to send Shelter Boxes. You will find a ink to that letter elsewhere in this Nairator.

Rotary has already committed 7,000 Shelter Boxes which will help 70,000 Haitians. But the need is even greater since over a million Haitians remain homeless because their homes were completely destroyed. I received the following update from Rotary International:

5,000 Shelter Boxes already arrived in Hailti and aid for another 18,000 Haitians left the United Kingdom on Friday, February 5th.

The chartered flight will leave from London Stansted airport and fly into Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The Shelter Boxes will then travel overland into Haiti. This is the third flight of aid that has left the UK for Haiti in as many weeks.

Flying with the aid are ShelterBox Response Team members Mark Boeck, UK and David Ray, UK as well as ShelterBox Head of Operations, John Leach, UK.

John has been running the aid effort from ShelterBox HQ and is relishing the chance to coordinate the response from the field.

"The logistical problems have eased and it's a relief that we now have a sizeable quantity of boxes on the ground and we can concentrate more on the distribution of boxes rather than the difficulty of getting them in," he said.

"There's still an overwhelming need for shelter and we have to continue to do all we can to get Shelter Boxes to those who need it the most. The security environment is difficult so we have to work hard with all the other agencies to achieve a coordinated approach to distribution."

I have been very proud of what we, the Haverhill Rotary Club, have been able to accomplish so far. In addition to the Shelter Boxes we have sent, we recently sent our grants to dozens of non-profits that requested a grant this year. It is also very rewarding to receive letters of thanks from these organizations for it shows how appreciative they organizations we support are, especially in these difficult economic times. Time will not permit me to read all the letters at a meeting. Here is a list of the organizations who have sent a letter expressing gratitude for our support:

  • Angel Flight NE
  • Buttonwoods Museum/Haverhill Historical Society
  • Girls Inc.
  • Haverhill Council on Aging
  • Haverhill Firefighting Museum
  • Merrimack Valley Dream Factory
  • Northern Essex Elder Transport, Inc.
  • Penacook Place
  • 2009 Gazette Santa Fund
  • Whittier Birthplace

In addition, the John Greenleaf Whittier Middle School and the Dr. Paul Nettle Middle School sent letters of thanks for the thesauri we distributed to over 700 sixth grade students in the city.

Haverhill Rotarians: Pat yourself on the back. You're doing a great job for our community and the world!

    Rotarily Yours,

    Ira Korinow

Simon Malls has allowed members of district 7930 to display a ShelterBox at their malls and collect donations for Haitian relief. Members of Haverhill Rotary, The Interact Club of Haverhill High School were at the Mall at Rockingham Park this weekend collecting donations. Steve Daley, regional ShelterBox Field Rep. and member of the North Andover Rotary Club, tells us that 5,200 ShelterBoxes have been deployed in Haiti and another 1,800 are on the way. Each ShelterBox can house up to 10 people.

    Houses for Houses

While standing at the ShelterBox tent display a woman and a little girl approached the tent and started taking pictures. I approached them and asked if they would be interested in learning more about Shelter Box. She told me that she was a teacher from Lawrence: The Emily G. Wetherbee School and that her students have been working on a "Haiti Houses" project. They have created magnets in the shape of houses. Each one personally designed by a student. They have been selling them for $1.00 each. All the money raised is for relief for Haiti. She had been at the mall on Saturday and was so impressed by Rotary and Shelter Box that she went home thinking about our project and how her project could work in conjunction with ours. And then it came to her: "Houses for Houses"! She came back yesterday and deposited $300.00 in our jar and said that additional money would becoming. She gave me some pictures of the kids doing the project and two magnets. I was so impressed. I asked her if she would like to speak to the Rotary one week; come there with some students and they could tell us all about their decision to help out the people in Haiti and ultimately donate to Shelter Box. She was thrilled and thought that this might be a great opportunity for the kids. - Bonnie Michaleas
