Comedian • Ventriloquist • Publisher
Al Getler, comedian, ventriloquist and publisher of The Eagle Tribune Newspaper will be our guest speaker this week. He began studying the art of ventriloquism at the age of eight years old. Studying and accomplishing ventriloquism was a solo act as there was no place to go to learn the rare art. "I then discovered record albums by Jimmy Nelson and listened to them repeatedly for hours on end," Al recalls. At age twelve, Getler had his first chance to perform professionally and hasn't stopped since. Al has performed at theaters, casinos, comedy clubs and colleges across the USA. He has been seen on TV and also been the featured speaker/performer at many of the country's FORTUNE 500 companies' meetings and business celebrations. Check out this video: Lefty & Righty.
President's Message

Dear Rotarians,
I fined myself on Thursday for having written a message last Monday and forgetting to send it. Therefore, this message is a combination of some old news and some more recent news.
Congratulations to Jim Vanderpol on the publishing of his book, And The Money Went Over The Railing: How a Dutch Survivor from WWII Found a Future in the U.S. and his program related to it on Thursday, March 11th. The book's publication date could not be more appropriate as the observance of Yom Ha-Shoah (Holocaust Memorial Day) is Monday, April 12th this year. Jim's experience in Holland and his message must never be forgotten. I personally look forward to reading the book.
As promised, I will keep you informed of the thank you letters I receive from the recipients of Rotary grants this year. I recently received the notes of thanks from:
- Friends of Bethany Homes
- Home Health VNA
- Haverhill Police Department Summer Youth Program
- Friends Forever
- YMCA of the North Shore in Haverhill
It continues to be heartwarming to read the letters, all of which express much gratitude to the Haverhill Rotary Club.
Last week Rotary filled a table at the 9th Annual Exchange Club's St. Patrick's Day Breakfast. Although we purchased the table well in advance of the event, we were relegated to a far corner of the room. And although it seemed at times that we were sitting in a different time zone, the program was enjoyable and filled with St. Patrick's Day humor. Congratulations are due to the Haverhill Exchange Club for all the good they do in helping child abuse prevention programs! We hope, of course, that they will reciprocate for our support of their program by actively supporting our 2nd Duck Regatta in September.
A couple of dates to mark on your calendars: Monday, May 3rd is the next time that we'll be serving at Community Meals. If you have never done so, plan to be there. With nearly two months warning, there's no excuse not to mark it on your calendar! Of course, the list of those responsible for bringing desserts that day will be released a couple of weeks before the date.
See you all on Thursday.
Rotarily Yours,
Ira
Exchange Club Breakfast

President Ira along with other club presidents were asked to participate in a trivia contest during the Exchange Club's St. Patrick's Breakfast last Wednesday. Seems he was having a personality crisis.
Last week each member of the club was assigned a business to solicit a sponsorship donation of between $500 and $2,500. Download a copy of the Sponsorship Flyer to assist you in the solicitation. The Duck Regatta is our major fundraiser. Sponsorships are needed to cover the expenses of running the race which allows us to donate 100% of the proceeds of the duck sales to charity. Over forty organizations are counting on our support so please make your best effort. We need commitments no later than April 15th. Collect the name and address of the appropriate contact person even if your business is unable to donate this year. We will keep this data for future solicitations. Once a business had committed to a donation we will send them an invoice. If you have a gold sponsor ( $2,500 ) we will also need an electronic copy of their logo. If you have any questions or can not solicit your assigned business contact Steven Goddu ASAP.

Each club member is asked to donate toward the ShelterBox haitian relief. If you have not yet made your donation please download this pledge form to help us plan our giving for this important relief effort: MS Word PDF

Davis Shikes was our guest speaker last week. He gave us a taste of the humor he shares with councils on aging all around the New England Area. He mentioned that we were a much younger audience that who he is used to addressing but we had no trouble relating to his jokes.
