Happy Easter and Happy Passover to all who celebrate either (or both) holiday(s)!
What a great meeting last week! Several people said after the meeting how much they enjoyed the speaker. Thanks to Steve Goddu for setting it up. Good meetings help recruit good members. We all share the responsibility for finding good speakers as well as the responsibility for finding good members. Please help do your part by helping find one good presenter this year and get a "two-fer" You'll help us build a better club!
Two weeks ago, Bob Edwards, Chairman of the Cincinnati Duck Regatta, emphasized how important teamwork will be for our success. We can't work together if we don't know what each other is doing. Toward this end, starting this week, after every Thursday lunch meeting, we will hold a duck race team leaders' meeting. None will last longer than an hour. Hopefully many will be shorter than an hour. Our primary goal is to have at least one of each team's co-leaders attend to share what their team has done in the past week and to hear what the other teams have done. If you are a team leader and can't make a meeting, please make sure your partner or another active member of your team can.
Don't forget to contact Dick Sundell or Cindy Ryan if you can help with even just one school's Thesaurus delivery. Let's get those books out there!
See you Thursday!

District News
Registration for the District Assembly closes tomorrow, April 15. The District Assembly will be held the following Wednesday, April 22nd at the Danvers Sheraton from 3 - 8 PM. Similarly, the District Conference is coming right up on May 1 and 2 (Friday and Saturday) in Salem, MA.
These meetings can be great.
If you are a new Rotarian, you can learn a ton quickly about the BIG Rotary picture, i.e., what happens at the District and International levels and what are the frameworks for the many, varied Rotary International programs that we have available to us and that we keep hearing about.
Maybe you are a more veteran member, looking to find a place where you fit in? These meetings will help.
If you are a member of our club's leadership / Board of Directors, you can get more advanced knowledge about every aspect of Rotary in part just by meeting and picking the brains of similar but more experienced Rotarians, let alone through formal workshops.
If you want to take a better shot at a District Simplified Grant - we were the next application on their list to fund this year! You can find out who got funded to do what this year, giving you a better idea what to propose next year.
All of us can make or renew business and Rotary contacts outside Haverhill Rotary, as well as find support among similar community- minded and service-minded individuals from teenagers to octogenarians.

Happy Birthday Ana
Our Exchange student, Ana Gogua, celebrated her 18th birthday birthday with us at last weeks meeting. Pictured with Ana is Lucinda Nolet who has been one of Ana's host families during her senior year of high school at Haverhill High. Turning 18 is just as big a deal in the Republic of Georgia as it is in the US.

Fred Gets A Mortgage.
When I was age nineteen I wanted to buy a house with a barn and about two acres of land in Atkinson. A family friend was Fred B. Smith. He was the President of the then Plaistow Cooperative Bank. It was in the center of Plaistow at the time. It was about 1949.
Before he joined the bank he had for many years run a mail order business. He kept this business and ran it in his spare time. He and his wife liked to go to Florida for the month of February. So I used to take of the business so that that they could get away.
The house that I wanted to buy was $2000.00. I had about $500.00
and called Fred and told him what I would like to do. He asked about the price. He also asked if I had any money. I told him that I had $500.00.
He suggested that this would be an acceptable down payment. I told him that the house needed work and that I wanted to use that money for those
repairs. He then asked me how old I was, I told him, age 19. He said that a person is supposed to age 21 to negotiate a mortgage. He asked for directions to the property and told me that he and the Directors looked at
property on Tuesdays and that I should call him on Wednesday for their answer.
I called on Wednesday and he said that they would go along with the loan. I asked if they were going to go along for the full selling price? He said yes. I then asked what the Directors thought about me not being 21.
"The subject never came up" he said.
I got the loan.

Speakers
Richard Labell of Labell Presentations spoke to us last week and proved to us that he is truly a motivational speaker. He brings a message to teens to resist drugs, alcohol and violence using a positive and high energy audio visual presentation. Rick has offered to make his presentation "Winning It All" to one of our schools as a thank you for allowing him to speak at Haverhill Rotary. Since Rick is a member of the first graduating class of Consentino School they are being offered Rick's presentation first. Rick's speaking fee is $600.00 and I think we would all agree a worthwhile investment in our youth.
You can contact Rick Labell at 603 382 4981 or check out his web site: www.labellpresentations.com.
