  • President's Message

    Dear Rotarians,

I want to first thank Tom Vartabedian for his message and stories that he told at our meeting last week. The Armenian Genocide in which 1,500,000 Armenians were systematically killed during World War I, like the Holocaust in which 6,000,000 Jews were killed during World War II, must never be forgotten. It is a solemn coincidence that both the Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust are both remembered at this time of the year.

Congratulations to Ken Smith who was feted by Pentucket Bank for his many years of service as President and CEO of the bank. Well-deserved, Ken!

Congratulations to Tom Faulkner on his pending retirement as President of Haverhill Bank.

With our two Rotarian bank presidents stepping down, do our local banks know something about the economy that we don't know!?!

Congratulations also to Joan Stygles Hull on being honored on her retirement from MV Home Health VNA on April 8th.

Congratulations once again to Joan on her being given, with Tom Vartabedian, the 2010 Distinguished Citizens Award. The Yankee Clipper Council of the Boy Scouts of America will honor Joan and Tom on Thursday evening, May 6th at DiBurro's Function Facilities in Ward Hill. If you haven't yet responded, please do so. If you didn't receive the official announcement and invitation, please see Chuck Marvin. Let's have a big Rotary turnout!

Don't forget May 3rd is the next time we sponsor Community Meals. I should have a list of those responsible for bringing desserts very soon. Whether or not you're on that list, being at the Citizens' Center that afternoon is a rewarding experience.

This week we sent a check for another $1,000 to Shelter Box USA. This brings the total that we have sent directly from our club to $15,000. In addition, we were credited with another 4 boxes ($4,000) from the contributions we received while working at the mall. We ought to be very proud. By the way, continue to pay off your pledges - the need is still very great.

    See you on Thursday!

    Rotarily Yours,

    Ira

    Sponsorship Drive Extended

Like Bevis said: "Totally Awesome, $12,700.00!" in sponsorship commitments during a down economy. Many thanks to everyone who has helped with this very important part of our major fund raiser. Last year we raised over $14,000.00 and we really need to increase that amount for this year's race. Please take these next few weeks and make an additional effort to get a few more sponsors on board. With the addition of the Eagle Tribune as a major media sponsor our sponsors will get a great deal of exposure. This is a nobel cause. Your efforts will help support the needs of people in our community who will otherwise go without.

Download a revised copy of the Sponsorship Flyer that has our new deadline to assist you in the solicitation.

The Rubber Duck Regatta is our major fundraiser and we need everyone's help to make it a success. Sponsorships are needed to cover the expenses of running the race which allows us to donate 100% of the proceeds of the duck sales to charity. Over forty organizations are counting on our support so please make your best effort. We need commitments no later than our extended date of May 6th.

Collect the name and address of the appropriate contact person even if your business is unable to donate this year. We will keep this data for future solicitations. Once a business had committed to a donation we will send them an invoice. If you have a gold sponsor ( $2,500 ) we will also need an electronic copy of their logo.

Below are a few businesses that still should be contacted for a Sponsorship/Donation:

  • Triad Associates
  • 512 Media Merrimack Valley Magazine
  • Lowell Spinners
  • Target
  • Garrison Golf Center
  • Burgett Brothers inc, dba Mason & Hamlin
  • Haverhill Country Club (Foursome of Golf?)
  • Atkinson Country Club (Foursome of Golf?)
  • TD Bank North
  • Lowes

If you plan to solicit one of these businesses or can not solicit your assigned business contact Steven Goddu ASAP.

    ShelterBox Donations

Each club member is asked to donate toward the ShelterBox haitian relief. If you have not yet made your donation please download this pledge form to help us plan our giving for this important relief effort: MS Word PDF

Chuck Traver has composed a letter that can be used to assist in soliciting donations. Download one of two formats:MS Word PDF

    Updating Records

Please take a moment to help us update our records. A copy of the MS Word document is available by clicking the following link: MEMBERSHIPDATA.doc. Bring the form to out club meeting or email it to Bonita Michaleas our club secretary.

Tom Vartabedian spoke to us last week about the Armenian Genocide and how it is still not recognized as such by the federal government. Tom and Ira are holding a proclamation signed by Governor William Weld in 1996 recognizing this tragedy of World War 1 in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and proclaiming April 24th as Armenian Martyrs Day.
