NECN Meteorologist Matt Noyes

Haverhill native Matt Noyes began as the weekend meteorologist at NECN in 2002, and has been the morning meteorologist, Monday through Friday, since 2004, now overseeing on-air and off-air implementation of weather broadcasting methods for NECN's team of meteorologists. Matt holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology from Cornell University, and is a member of both the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association. Matt enjoys making the weather interesting and accessible to all. In addition to his forecasting experience, Noyes was an instructor of Introductory Meteorology at the college level in Binghamton, NY. He spearheaded the idea for NECN's "Weather Word Contest" and "Sky Scenes" segments, and has traveled across New England to bring the science of meteorology into school classrooms, receiving commendation from the Massachusetts State Senate for his educational efforts with children. Matt's community dedication also earned him the Massachusetts State Police Public Service Award for assisting the organization in preparation for a major hurricane strike to New England, and he provided his services to the organization for street level weather forecasting and analysis during the Democratic National Convention in 2004. Noyes also conducts private forecasting for aviators, providing forecasts that have led to national victories in races requiring no use of instrumentation during flight. Before joining the NECN family, Matt was the Morning Meteorologist at NewsChannel 34 in Binghamton, NY, and a meteorologist at NewsChannel 9 in Syracuse, NY. Matt will be our guest speaker this week.
President's Message

Dear Rotarians,
Once again we had the opportunity to welcome to our newest member, Beth-Anne Grunzweig of Linehan Grondin Funeral Home, and whom we got to know a little better from her Classification Talk. We know that you'll be contributing a lot as a Rotarian, Beth-Anne!
This has to have been the earliest spring that I can remember. I estimate that flowering bushes and budding trees have opened at least two weeks earlier than normal. What does all of this mean for the season ahead? We may get some answers from New England Cable News Meteorologist, and Haverhill native, Matt Noyes when he speaks at Rotary this Thursday.
Living where we are, we have a few opportunities coming up to share in what Rotary is doing locally, districtly, (I think I made up a new Rotary term!) and internationally.
Locally - Our next turn serving at Community Meals is Monday, May 3rd. I'll have the list of those responsible for bringing desserts very soon.
Districtly (Rotary way of saying regionally. In Rotary we have districts and not regions.) - We are hosting the cluster meeting for the Group Study Exchange for the north region of District 7930 on May 3rd. I have invited the Rotary clubs of Amesbury, Lawrence, Andover, North Andover and Salem-Methuen to our meeting that Thursday. We will have the opportunity to welcome the members of the GSE participants from London, England and to hear directly from them on their vocational visits here and on what's happening in Rotary on the other side of the Atlantic.
Internationally - Did you know that as part of the Polio Plus campaign Rotary is engaged in "Kick Polio Out of Africa," an awareness campaign? As part of this campaign, a special soccer ball is making its way through 22 polio-affected countries en route to the Rotary International Convention in Montréal, Québec, Canada, in June. You can follow its progress on an interactive map at the Rotary International website, Rotary.org Because this year's Rotary International Convention in June is only a 5 hour car ride from Haverhill, the "opportunity of a decade or so" is here and now. If you would like to attend the RI Convention in Montréal, you can download the necessary registration form, also at the RI website cited above.
What ways are YOU going to make Rotary more a part of your life? The opportunities are there and easily within reach!
Rotarily Yours,
Ira
More Sponsors Needed
Our current Total is $13,200 in Sponsorship Donations. We would like to raise closer to $20,000 if possible so please make that extra effort. Last year we raised over $14,000.00 and we really need to increase that amount for this year's race. With the addition of the Eagle Tribune as a major media sponsor our sponsors will get a great deal of exposure. Haverhill is counting on us.
Download a revised copy of the Sponsorship Flyer that has our new deadline to assist you in the solicitation.
The Rubber Duck Regatta is our major fundraiser and we need everyone's help to make it a success. Sponsorships are needed to cover the expenses of running the race which allows us to donate 100% of the proceeds of the duck sales to charity. Over forty organizations are counting on our support so please make your best effort. We need commitments no later than our extended date of May 6th.
Collect the name and address of the appropriate contact person even if your business is unable to donate this year. We will keep this data for future solicitations. Once a business had committed to a donation we will send them an invoice. If you have a gold sponsor ( $2,500 ) we will also need an electronic copy of their logo.
If you have questions or need assistance contact Steven Goddu ASAP.
Community Meals
Monday May 3rd The Rotary Club of Haverhill will be serving Community Meals at the Haverhill Citizens' Center. Mark your calendar for another opportunity for Service Above Self.
ShelterBox Donations
Each club member is asked to donate toward the ShelterBox haitian relief. If you have not yet made your donation please download this pledge form to help us plan our giving for this important relief effort: MS Word PDF
Chuck Traver has composed a letter that can be used to assist in soliciting donations. Download one of two formats:MS Word PDF
