Nationally renowned youth training program is now at Cedardale. Designed for youth 7 and older Parisi empowers athletes to improve their athletic performance by focusing on Speed, Strength, Flexibility, Endurance, Agility and Self-Confidence. Program Director, Kevin McKenzie, will be our guest speaker this week.

Bet you are glad that I will be back this week and that President-elect Ira is away fetching his son in NY. Man, hang on to your wallets when he becomes Prez! Ira, remember the M&M's? As in "Membership Matters?" Retention is as important as new members! Seriously, Ira will be a great club President.
Welcome to Adam Manchester of Haverhill Crossings. Thank you to Julian for sponsoring him. Thank you to Joe Cleary for inducting him.
Congratulations to Bonnie Michaleas as the new Club Secretary. The board voted her in unanimously last week. After that, the exchange of emails went some thing like this:
John to Bonnie: congratulations!
Bonnie to John: thanks!
John to Bonnie: oh and by the way, as promised, here's the manual.
Bonnie to John: 64 pages?!
John to Bonnie: too few?
Bonnie to John: a lot of homework!
John to Bonnie: small doses...
Many hands make light work. Bonnie will be ably assisted by several old hands at the welcome table and behind the scenes including Greg DiBurro, Bill Klueber, Buddy Baker, and I know Pam will be there as well, to mention just a few. Thank you so much to all, and especially to Bonnie!
Your Club Board of Directors also voted this week to support our District's application to be one of some 30 Districts across the globe to test out Rotary International's Future Vision organizational structure over the next two years. It is RI's attempt to improve for its next 100 years and among other things it involves moving more discretion and action from the HQ level in Chicago out to districts, while at the same time offering more streamlined and simpler ways for clubs to participate in international projects. Stay tuned!
Thanks also to Mary Gale, Darlene Beal, Frank Novak, Jonathan Miller. They helped me welcome the Inbound South African Group Study Exchange Team to Haverhill yesterday. The GSE Team toured Community Action's Fox Center Head Start and Adult Education classes. They visited the Merrimack Montessori School, enjoying a scrumptious lunch offered by Mary and her students parents and staff. The team rounded off the day with a full tour of Haverhill Community TV and taping, no, filming, no, (what do we say now, Darlene?! Digitizing?) a half hour show on Frank Novak's regular program, Point of Reference, to air on HCTV in a few weeks (if the GSE Team and I get over our shock at being interviewed on camera!). Speaking of GSE, applications are now being accepted for District 7930's next GSE Team Leader. It must be a Rotarian in the District. The team goes to England this year. See more info elsewhere in this issue of the Nariator. I highly recommend the experience!
Thanks also to Terry Beaton. Once again he succeeded in engaging two Pentucket High School students to participate in RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) this coming weekend at Camp Rotary in Boxford. As usual, it's the same weekend as the HHS Junior Prom. Anybody have a good contact at Whittier for next year, or did they have their Junior Prom this weekend as well?
See you Thursday!
John

Canadian Hospitality
My wife and I visit Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island quite a bit. When there I try to visit another Rotary Club. I have made quite a few visits to the Charlottetown, PEI club. At one of their meetings I met one of their members and found that we have similar interests. It has led to a long friendship and trips back and forth between Canada and the States. My friend's name is Austin L. Bowman and until retiring he was with the government of Canada.
One of the many things that he did was to monitor federally financed projects on farms. Usually he would call ahead to let the people know that he would be making a visit. One day he told the staff at his office that he was going out to a particular location that day. One of the Secretaries asked if he was going to call ahead. He said that he wasn't. When he arrived at the farm and saw the farmer and together they inspected the project and found everything satisfactory.
The farmer had no wife and lived alone. It's almost a tradition on Prince Edward Island that each visit requires having a cup of tea and so this man invited my friend in for tea. As my friend had the tea he noted to his host that the tea tasted different.
"Well maybe" said the farmer, "it's because it's goat's milk in the tea."
When my friend returned to his office he told the staff about the tea. Showing him no sympathy, one of the girls in the office said: "Serves you right, going without calling beforehand."
