John Anton is the Chairperson for MASS Advocates Standing Strong, a 501c3 non-profit organization. This is a group of self-advocates with developmental disabilities who are working together to empower themselves through education and making choices that improve and enrich their lives. Their slogan is "Nothing About Me, Without Me."
He will be presenting updates on the Name Change of the agency who serves them to Department of Developmental Disabilities from Department of Mental Retardation after over 12 years of lobbying statewide. Representative Michael Costello filed the legislation which eventually passed with many phone calls, letters, and visits to the State House.
Also, MASS Advocates will be holding their 2nd Annual "Trek for Respect" with Music and Art on the Waterfront in Salisbury with a walk, wheelchair, relay from Haverhill to Salisbury and The Rotary is invited to join them at the finish line to celebrate the Name Change or sponsor participants, "Trekkers", in this exciting event. Thank you in advance for your support. John will be our guest speaker this week.

At last week's meeting I announced some basic details of our upcoming fundraiser, the Haverhill Rotary Club Rubber Duck Regatta. These were firmed up after the visit from Bob Edwards, Head Duck of the Cincinnati Duck Race, which is now 14 years old and netted over a half million dollars this year. For those of you who missed the meeting, I want to be sure you didnšt miss the information.
Our Rubber Duck Regatta will be held the morning of Sat. September 12.
The ducks will be dropped from the Basiliere Bridge.
They will "race" just a few hundred yards to a point in front of the Crescent Yacht Club.
People will be able to adopt ducks at 1 for $5.00, "Quack Packs" of 6 for $25.00, a "Quacker's Dozen" of 12 for $50.00, and probably a Flock of 25 for $100.00.
We hope to start selling adoptions about a week after the 4th of July. Typically, over half the sales will come in the last two weeks.
Our goal is 20,000 duck adoptions. We will be thrilled with anything over 10,000 ducks adopted.
A website for online sales should go up before the 4th of July.
The ducks should arrive about the beginning of September. A "tagging party" will occur the week before Sept. 12th. At that party we will remove old tag numbers from ducks and apply new ones.
This is the club's major fundraiser. With the economy and the stock market in tough shape and government cutbacks greater than any time in recent memory, local non-profits need our help more than ever. In the coming weeks, we'll have concrete ways for each club member to get involved and I really hope and trust that you will pitch right in.
The Board decided last week to postpone our annual distribution of funds to local non-profits until after the Rubber Duck Regatta results are in and booked, sometime in the late fall.
We are in the final push to make donations to the Rotary Foundation before the end of Rotary's fiscal year, which is June 30. Even if you cannot make the same donation you could make in a better year, please consider a donation so the club can make real the phrase "every Rotarian every year." The Foundation's vital work, our vital work, towards health, clean water, world peace and other laudable goals cannot continue without our support.
Our Exchange Student this year from Georgia, Ana Gogua, goes back June 20. We are holding a goodbye pot luck at the Merrimack Montessori School, on Monday June 8 at 6:30 PM. Everyone is invited. Please RSVP to Mary at megale_99@yahoo.com
In last week's Nairator we highlighted the District search for a Group Study Exchange Team Leader for the trip to England this fall. The deadline is June 8. If you are interested, I'd be happy to share what I've learned. I really encourage you to try for it. You have to speak the language, though.
Many Rotarian's were at the wake for Don Nolet last Friday. A Memorial Service will be held Sat. May 30th, 11 AM, Riverside Memorial Church, 278 Groveland Street. Everyone is welcome to attend. Don did a lot for our community. He will be missed.
A Rotarian has been selected for a community service award. Do you know who it is? Stay tuned!
We heard that the annual fishing weekend of several Haverhill Rotary Club members happened this past weekend. We missed the fishermen from last week's meeting. We are really looking forward to some exciting "big fish" stories this week!
Thanks for all that you do.
See you Thursday!
John
