Masaru Komura
Our speaker this week is Masaru Komura, a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar from Japan, studying for a Master's in Public Policy at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. Masaru is currently the only Harvard student scholar from Asia. His previous work experience includes managing public property, closing complicated land purchases, conceptualizing and executing international marketing strategies for export of local products. After graduation, he plans to work in a public financing institute in Japan and engage in regional development. In his spare time in Japan, he volunteered at a children's orphanage.

Group Study Exchange Visitors from Brazil: A few weeks ago we met Joanna Clement, a Haverhill resident and Head Start teacher leaving this Friday for Brazil for a month as a member of our District 7930 Group Study Exchange Team. On May 15, we will have the opportunity to meet and hear from the members of the incoming Brazilian Group Study Exchange Team. These include Ana L. Coelho, Team Leader; and team members: Marcelo O. Goncalves, Michelle C. Rodrigues, Roberto Mendonca and Rita C. S. Goulart.
In addition to hosting them for the club meeting, we are being asked to help them learn more about their respective occupations and interests in the U.S. that afternoon. I will be insuring that Rita experiences her area, early childhood education and English for speakers of other languages. I need help with the other team members. Ana is a pharmacist who works in quality assurance and supplier qualification for a major Brazilian pharmaceutical company. She is interested in learning more about similar work in the US. Anybody have a connection at Wyeth Labs in Andover? Her hobbies are reading and yoga. She also loves music, but plays no instruments.
Marcelo is a businessman working in the quality area of his family's foundry. He would love to meet business managers and visit a foundry or businesses related to metallurgy. He is also a member of his District's Rotoract and would be interested to see how Rotary youth programs are done in the US. He would also love to visit some catholic churches.
Roberto is a psychologist. He would like to know about psychology courses in local colleges and universities, and would like to know how the American mental health system works. He is a musician who plays several musical instruments and also a music teacher and would like to visit places where jazz and blues are played.
Michelle works in finance (accounts receivable) in a large construction shop. She would like to visit different companies, talk to business managers and learn more about business administration methods and leadership techniques commonly used. She is also interested generally in the culture and history of the area.
My ideal is to find one Haverhill Rotarian to match up with each Brazilian team member and take them from the club to visit a site and/or meet with a person relevant to their interests and /or career. You need not stay with the person the entire afternoon, just link them to the right site/s or person/s for a few hours. We should then bring them back together in time for dinner somewhere locally. The dinner plan is still evolving. Please let me know ASAP if you can help host a team member in any way. Email to jcuneo@communityactioninc.org or call me at work at 978-373-1971x223.
Fireside Chat: please don't forget - 5:15 pm, Wednesday, May 14th, Evenfall. Drinks, hors' d'oeuvres and club discussion.
