What a great auction! Chuck Traver captured the sentiment of many when he spoke at the last meeting about how concerned he was that we would have a successful live silent auction night after cancelling the TV auction and recognizing that we were slow in bringing in auction items. Despite the challenges, the family and friends of Haverhill Rotary came through in stellar fashion! This week Vin and Bill Klueber sat down to review the club's annual distribution of funds to local charities and we are in good shape.

The count down to the next Rotary year is moving right along. Both our club installation and the district installation will be held on the same date June 26th. The club installation will occur during our regular luncheon meeting at Evenfall. Vin is getting real excited. We can't figure out if it's 'cause he is flying out to Florida right after or stepping down from being our President! Please invite your friends and family if you'd like. Let's honor him for the great job he has done! The district installation is the same evening beginning at 6pm at the Danversport Yacht Club. So far we have about 8 - 10 people from Haverhill attending. If you'd like to attend that event, please see Bill Klueber.

Speaking of jobs well done, a year ago Mary Gale was searching for families who'd like to learn more about hosting a Rotary Youth Exchange student. Now we are very close to saying goodbye to our first exchange student, Luca Scaccabarozzi from Italy. Great jobs, Mary and Luca! Thanks! Great job and thanks, too, to the Bergman, Pettis and Bonanno families for hosting Luca.

Mary is now working to identify host families for the next academic year. Please contact Mary or me if you or someone you know would like to learn more about what is involved. The host family does not have to be a Rotary family. So, if you have a neighbor or friend who is interested, please let us know!

Several weeks ago we heard from Masaru Komura, a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar from rural Japan finishing his Master's degree at the Kennedy School of Government. The district expects 5-7 new in-bound Ambasssadorial Scholars for the coming academic year. Would you be interested in serving as a "host counselor?" Here's a list of the responsibilities:

• correspond with scholar and their Sponsor Counselor prior to their arrival
• greet the scholar at the airport (if requested)
• assist scholar in settling into their program
• assist scholars with early shopping needs and transportation (as needed)
• invite scholar to Rotary events and service projects
• provide opportunities to introduce the scholar to American culture
• follow-up with scholar when his/her reports are due to RI
• present first award check to scholar
• ensure scholar meets his/her presentation requirements (10-15 presentations)
• assist scholar in developing his/her presentations
• be available to answer questions about Rotary
• be available for advice and friendship
• attend the D7930 Counselor Training & NORTHEAST LINK
• invite scholar to make farewell speech at your club
• keep the In-Bound Scholar Coordinator updated with activities, concerns, presentations, etc.

It sounds like a lot, but once you think it through, in usual RI fashion, they have all the bases covered and it's a great opportunity to meet and mentor a bright young person from another country and culture. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact me.

I was with New England Telephone at one time. In the beginning years I was in the residence phone section of the company. When we had done all of our service orders for the day we would spend the rest of our time going to houses where phones that had been shut off and the telephone sets were still there. The company owned all of the phones then. We would visit such places and try to retrieve the disconnected instruments.

There was one house in Newton, NH that I went to quite a few times, would knock on the door but got no answer. Each time I would cause the dog in the house to start barking. Finally one day a lady answered the door and I told her that I was there to take the phone out. "We are going to have that phone turned on again" she said. The dog was behind her barking all of the time that I was talking to her. I told her that we had to have the phone right now. The barking dog must have sensed that the lady was a bit emotional and so he charged by her and took a bite out of my leg! Why would a dog bite a sweet thing like me? But I got the phone.

A few weeks later the boss gave me an order to install a phone at this same house. This time I asked the lady through the screen door to tie the dog up before I came in. The phone got installed successfully that day.

Newburyport Rotarian & Mayor John Moak officially congratulated Martha (Clohisy) Bower after christening the Newburyport Y.W.C.A. pool on May 20th by swimming the first lap. The U.N.H. Hall of Famer was given the honor by Y Board of Directors. Pictured with Mayor Moak & Martha are her son Caleb, husband Dr. Tom Bower, daughter Jean & father in law Dr. Arthuer Bower.
