In this week's Nairator is news of the opportunity to apply for this Rotary year's District Group Study Exchange Team to England. This is a great opportunity and I urge you to spread the word among non-Rotarian professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 who can get a month off from work but want to learn about their work in another part of the world. It's a great opportunity because GSE is a great, life-changing opportunity in and of itself. I'll give you some sense of that, as I am this week's lunch speaker, with pictures to show and tell you about this past year's GSE trip to South Africa, which I had the privilege to lead. We also have a developing trend, not to say tradition, to uphold; which is we have sent members of the last two years' GSE teams. Joanna Clement went to Brazil in the Rotary year 2007-8.

One of the things that makes GSE, Ambassadorial Scholarships, Peace Fellowships and other wonderful Rotary International programs possible are the donations that we and many others give to RI each year. Please consider making your donation for this year if you have not already done so. I know it is a tough year for many. Those who are doing fine, please consider adding some extra for those who cannot this year. If you are only doing so-so, please consider Rotary for maybe one of your treasured few donations this year (Rotary's year ends at the end of this month), because you know first hand of the value of the programs it provides. You've heard from Darlene and others about the good polio prevention and facial plastic surgery work done in India and South America. You've heard Joanna and I talk about study exchange to Brazil and Africa. We've heard from a young Japanese scholar studying at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard talk about his efforts to help the rural development of his country. And we've watched Luca from Italy and Ana from the Republic of Georgia rowing up before out eyes. If this has not been a good year for you and you cannot give this time, that is of course understandable. If you can, though, please turn in your donation to Ron Albert or Ken Smith.

Writing about Ana, finally, reminds me of the celebration and good bye we had Monday evening at Merrimack Montessori School hosted by Mary Gale. Thanks so much, Mary! And thank you to Jon Miller, Jackie Bannister and her husband, Steve Goddu and his children, Phil Brown, Lucinda Nolet, my wife Mary Jane and the Foucaults and their kids for showing up. Ana has grown so much in her year here in America! She has graduated from high school! Though she is looking forward to being with her family and returning to her beloved Georgian countryside, she is sad to go and to say good-bye to the many friends she has made while she's been here. One of the great things to hear last night was from Greg Foucault, Ana's final host dad this year. He and his wife, Cindy have been wonderful host parents. They are also hosting another exchange student at Haverhill High School this year. Greg commented that Rotary's exchange program has been phenomenal this year in terms of the opportunities offered to Ana. In comparison, the opportunities the other exchange program offered their other student were "nothing." This is partly testament to the hard work of Mary Gale as our Youth Exchange Officer and to the District Youth Exchange Committee led by Jackie Bannister. It also again speaks to the leadership of RI as a vital international volunteer service organization that warrants our support.

See you Thursday,

John

Misplaced Tears

Harold and Bea Rogers were Guy Lombardo fans as were Fred and Martha Mac Donald. We used to go together whenever the band was in this area. When the group was scheduled to appear in Framingham it was at the time of Guy's death. We had tickets for their appearance but were left to wonder if the show would go on. Well it was decided that it would. Guy Lombardo's Brother in Law was Kenny Gardiner and he would lead the band. This would be their first appearance after the funeral for Guy Lombardo.

We had a table right up at the stage and were visiting with the Rogers. At this time it looked like one of our daughters was going to move across the country. Harold listened sympathetically and told us that he remembers when their daughter Cheryl was going to move to California. He was out on the field plowing and thinking about this and told us that the front of his shirt was soaked with his tears from thinking about her moving.

The band was now coming on stage in their jackets with the Maple Leaf on their pockets. The Boston TV stations were there with their cameras. Martha didn't notice the band coming onto the stage, she was busy listening to Harold's story about his tears. A tear started to roll down Martha's cheek and the TV cameras zoomed in on her. She was on the evening news, and the next day on the morning news and the noon news. They suggested that the cameras were showing a distraught Guy Lombardo fan. Not quite.

Our daughter did not move out West after all.
The Rogers girl came back to Ward hill later.
