Stan Usovicz is the former Mayor of Salem Massachusetts and now works as regional director of external affairs for Verizon. He will speak to us this week about of the growth of fiber optics and what options are available through Verizon.

Jim Vanderpol and I are meeting soon about whether and how to create a way for our retired members with more time and fewer funds (not to mention other members or potential members in the same financial position) to participate actively in the club based on time spent in "service above self" in lieu of some of the financial burden. We'd love some help in crafting a proposal to the board. We're starting from a concept called "Timebanking." If you are interested in helping, please let Jim and I and know.

Other club members are also soon to continue work exploring our next major fundraiser, a duck race on the Merrimack. I've done some preliminary investigating and it looks promising. Right after our first club meeting in July on the 10th, I'd like to spend a half hour meeting on this to start to get us organized. Interested? Please let me know...

Old Fashion Ride

Fred MacDonald drove Jim, Cora Mae & Jeanine Murphy to Friendly's for Ice Cream Sundaes in his 1931 Ford Model A sedan. The ride was given as a birthday gift to Jeanine's father Jim.

Canoe Race Winner

Jeff Davis and cousin Steve Davis were the winners of a canoe race to benefit Special Olympics. The Davis' were representing Haverhill Rotary in this event. These glasses look perfect to be filled with amber adult beverages after all that hard work.

Speakers

Colonel "Randy" Dobbins spoke to us last week about his experiences in Iraq and what's going on with the Air Force in general. He had everyone's attention for an unprecedented twenty minutes over our allotted time. His talk was interesting, shocking, informative and made you feel proud to be an American.
