Congratulations John CuneoHaverhill Rotary President 2008-2009

Last week we inducted John Cuneo as Haverhill Rotary president for the 2008-2009 fiscal year. Past President Vin Bonanno passed the non-traditional torch to John with a big smile. We're not sure if the smile was because his year was over or because he was on his way to Florida. Haverhill Rotary will be guided by John during the next twelve months but as always he is counting on everyone's help to make this coming year as successful as the past. Vin and John watch the Haverhill Rotary swan mascot fly south from Atkinson, NH to Haverhill where John will take custody for the coming Rotary year.
July 1, 2008

So the swan passed to me at the last meeting, and I am very honored to be your President for the next year. As I said then, this is not my year but another of our years. Let's work hard while having lots of fun to make our club and Rotary in Haverhill as LARGE as Rotary can be. There is so much we can do together!
Soon, Tom Elliott, the new District 7930 Governor, will visit us. He will meet with the Board of Directors starting at 11:30 AM and then join us for lunch. In all, he will visit all 47 clubs of the District over the next year. The Governor's official visit is a requirement of Rotary International and one of the most important functions he performs as District Governor. He has been a member of Rotary since 1990. Tom is from the Danvers club, where he served as President in 1996-7. He is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow. Tom founded Danvers Auto Engineering, Automotive Repair and Service Center in 1987, with his wife and business partner Carol Elliott. They continue to own and manage the business. Tom is also very active with the Danvers YMCA board of Directors and will serve as its president in 2010-12. Tom's major goal and emphasis is not upon District initiatives but to assist local clubs in attaining their Rotary goals. He and his district team are hard at work developing a major public relations campaign to help promote all the clubs throughout District 7930 in order to recruit new members and to reinforce and recognize the work of existing members and club initiatives. Please join me in giving Tom and his team, including our Assistant Governor Dennis Sweeney, a warm Haverhill Rotary welcome.
Just a quick reminder, next week we start to get our duck racing plans "off the ground" so to speak. (Sorry!) If you can stay a few minutes after next Thursday's meeting and are interested in getting in close to the beginning, we will continue developing plans for a major duck race fundraiser to be held on the Merrimack River. Tentatively, tho' we are a ways from anything final. I hope we can hold this event in late April, or early May 2009 in conjunction with Kidsfest. The Auction would then be moved to fall 2009, giving us two large and different fundraisers for the 2009 calendar year and, assuming the first duck race is successful and we decide to continue it, two major fundraisers for Pres. Elect Ira's 2009-10 year in office. I promise you, the meeting will be brief. If you can't stay after next Thursday, but want to get involved, please let me know.
Passing of the Gavel

Vin and Linda Bonnano pictured above displaying the past president's gavel plaque. Under Vin's guidance Haverhill Rotary has raised over $47,000.00 that will be distributed to local charities. This year has been active, fun, and successful. Special thanks to Linda for many hours of behind the scene assistance.

The Paul Harris Society is named after Paul P. Harris, founder of Rotary
International. Paul Harris formed the world's first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905. His intention was
to recapture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth.
Today, Paul Harris Society contributions to The Rotary Foundation support a wide range of humanitarian grants and educational programs that enable Rotarians to bring hope and promote international understanding throughout the world.

Rotarian needed for Summer Reading Committee
The Haverhill Public Library and the Haverhill Schools have a longstanding collaboration to develop summer reading lists for students. Since reading can be very "uncool" for many high schoolers in particular, we're expanding the committee to include some teens, parents and community leaders. Any Rotarian who would like to help promote reading and literacy in Haverhill please contact Mary Johnson-Lally, 978-373-1586 x621 . A literate, educated student today is the Rotarian of tomorrow! You may email Mary at mjohnson_lally@mvlc.org.
