President's Message

Dear Friends,
Thank you for helping me get through my first meeting as President without any major faux pas.
Unfortunately, my first bit of business in this Nairator is to inform you of the death of long-time Haverhill Rotary member Harold Doherty. Harold passed away on July 8, 2009 in Florida where he has been residing since he left Haverhill. If you wish to send a an expression of sympathy to his wife, Carolyn, her address is:
10A Cape Shore Drive
Cape Canaveral, Florida 32920
May Harold's life and memory serve us all for a blessing.
At our meeting this past week, we spent the usual program time working as teams on the Rubber Duck Regatta. Team meetings are critical now to the success of the race. Believe it or not, the race is only 2 months away! The dozens of non-profits that we support rely on us to come through and I know that as Rotarians we will do exactly that.
If you weren't present at our last meeting, you did not see the Grand Prize - the brand new 2009 Nisan Versa 4 door sedan donated by Rockingham Nisan on Route 97 in Salem, NH. Many thanks to Rockingham owner Emmett Horgan whose support of our auction over the years continues with his donation of the car. We saw at Haverhill Stadium before the fireworks on July 5th that this Grand Prize is going to make it easier to sell ducks. That along with the Million Dollar Duck sponsored by Pentucket Bank. (Thank you Ken, Scott & Cindy!) Our goal is to sell a minimum of 10,000 (yes, ten thousand!) ducks and, with everyone's support and involvement, it is an attainable goal.
Please be sure to mark your calendars for our Thursday, July 23rd meeting. District Governor Ingrid Brown will be making her visit to our club then and will speak about what's happening in District 7930 and around the world. I know we'll give her a rousing Haverhill welcome!
Enjoy these beautiful summer days - after the kind of June we had, we deserve it!
Rotarily Yours,
Ira

Very...
The word "VERY".
Remember, I never claimed to be sane.
Some time ago I read about an editor that told his writers that if they ever submitted anything with the word VERY in it he would throw out the piece. His thinking? Is very hot any warmer than hot? Is very cold any colder than cold? And so on.
He felt that people sprinkled that word into their conversations and that it served no good purpose and wasted time and space.
Since then I have made a conscious effort to avoid using that word.
Odd? Perhaps, but it makes one think about what they are saying.
Remember, I'm in the club now and you can't get me out.
