The Nairator

Reverend Paul H. Dionne

How did a Canuck Roman Catholic from Nashua end up being the pastor of the Atkinson Congregational Church? Reverend Paul Dionne will be at our club this week to tell us about his interesting life journey.

Coming up on August 10th is a District Youth Exchange Pot Luck, termed a "rebound meeting." The District had a number of outbound youth spending as much as an academic year in other countries and cultures. This pot luck from 4-6 pm on Sunday the 10th is a wonderful opportunity to see other countries and cultures through the eyes of our American students. We had a great time seeing Haverhill, our high school, and America through the eyes of Luca, our inbound exchange student from Italy. The meeting will be held at the North Parish of North Andover Unitarian Universalist, 190 Academy Road, North Andover, MA, downstairs in the parish hall. You can view directions and parking information on their web site northparish.org. It is a pot luck. Please bring a dessert or a side dish. They'll bring the drinks and sandwiches. We can do a better job recruiting families to host inbound foreign students as well as Haverhill area students to visit other countries if we understand just a little more of what's involved through the eyes of students who participate.

I have mentioned for several weeks the Tattersall Farm Day scheduled for Sunday September 14th, from noon to 5 pm, with the 21st as a rain date. After this week's meeting, Rotarian Kathy Bresnahan would like to meet very briefly with those able to volunteer a few hours to help out on this worthy event. Basically, Haverhill Rotary co-sponsors this event with the Trustees of the Farm, making a little money and gaining recognition for helping out by running a food booth selling hot dogs, hamburgers and the like. We need a few to run the grill and several more servers. In addition to service, this is a great opportunity for fellowship. Be sure to leave yourself time to take in some of the activities, as well as a quick tour of the farm. Please stay after to touch base with Kathy, so she can see who will help out.

Symposium Tomorrow July 30th

Rotary District 7930 has recently been invited to participate in a Children's Health Symposium at the Harvard School of Medicine. The coordinators specifically approached Rotary because of our initiative in the fight against Polio. The event is the KID'S RISK SYMPOSIUM - Managing Children's Risks: "Putting All Children Ahead". This is short notice. The event is tomorrow, Wednesday, the 30th of July from 8 to 5. However, Governor Tom, Foundation Chair Keith Harris and PolioPlus Chair Tom Standring feel we really need to take advantage of this invitation.

It is indeed a truly unique opportunity for our District, and for Rotary's exposure. Speakers include a number of authors, a Washington Times columnist, and the chief of the Enterovirus Section in the National Center for Infectious Diseases at CDC. District Foundation Chair Keith Harris will briefly address Rotary's role in the fight against Polio, and the importance of finishing that last 1%.

This is a great opportunity for Rotarians in our District involved in Health Care, particularly relating to children. Professor Thompson made it clear that any interested Rotarians would be very welcome.
The Symposium is free!

The Trustees of Tattersall Farm and the Haverhill Rotary Club are holding "Tattersall Farm Day" on Sunday, September 14, 2008, from Noon to 5:00 PM. The farm is located at 542 North Broadway. This event is sponsored in part by the Haverhill Cultural Council, a local program of the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Tattersall Farm Day will be a New England style cultural and educational event for people of all ages from Haverhill and surrounding communities. Activities will include nature walks, beekeeping, wine making, animal and farming demonstrations, storytelling, and much more! Live entertainment will be provided by E.J. Ouellette and Crazy Maggy who will perform traditional New England fiddle music. Food and beverages will be available. Rain date is Sunday, September 21st.

We need volunteers to help that day. Last year Greg DiBurro organized Rotarians who were instrumental in the success of the food concession. This generated a substantial amount of money for the Farm. We will again be in charge of the food but we also need help with parking and other organizational aspects of this event. Everyone had fun last year and this year will surely be the same.

Kathy Bresnahan will meet with interested volunteers after this week's meeting to answer questions and sign people up. You can also reach her at 978-374-2390 x11 or by email.

Speakers

Please accept my thanks for the warm reception I received from you and the the members of the Rotary Club of Haverhill during my Official District Governors Visit. After meeting with you and the board of directors I am confident that the Rotary Club of Haverhill will have a very successful year under John Cuneo's leadership as President. I want to reinforce my promise to you and the club membership that the District Leadership Team is here to assist you and your club in any way possible with it's projects and endeavors in 2008-2009 as we "Make Dreams Real" for the less fortunate of the world.

I hope that you and the members of the Haverhill Rotary Club find a worthy project this year that will help reduce the child mortality rate for children five years of age and younger through supporting a project that will continue to concentrate on improving conditions in the areas of Health, Hunger, Clean Water and Literacy by partnering with another Rotary Club and applying for a District Matching Grant funded with District Designated Funds that are available to your club or by applying for a District Simplified Grant that will fund a local community project.
