The Nairator

July 8, 2008

Welcome back! I hope you had a nice July 4th weekend. Mary Jane and I had a great view of the Haverhill Fireworks, courtesy of Haverhill Police Chief Alan DeNaro's generous 2008 Haverhill Rotary Auction Item that we purchased. Sergeant David Currier did a great job piloting our boat. Once the lightning, thunder and rain stopped, we had a pleasant ride up the Merrimack from Kazmiera Marina almost to the Crescent Yacht Club. Then we returned to join about 50 other boats of all sizes for a wonderful night time sky show! We had a lot of fun!

This Thursday, after our regular club meeting, from about 1:30 to 2, we'll launch our 2009 Merrimack River Derby Duck Race Planning Effort. At over a dozen sites nationwide, at least that many clubs and sometimes several at one site, have been running derby duck races in collaboration with GAME (Great American Merchandise and Event). To my knowledge, two of the oldest continuing Rotary sponsors have been the Redding East Rotary Club in California, running their event since 1990, and six clubs in the Tri-Cities area in Washington State, running theirs since 1988. This past October, the Redding race reportedly raised over $225,000.00. Similarly, the Tri-Cities Great Mid-Columbia Duck Race grossed over $200,000 and netted in the vicinity of $175,000 to $180,000. Most of the Rotary Clubs doing GAME derby duck races have been out west, but GAME-supported derby duck races are slowly spreading eastward and to the south. Next month, races are scheduled for New York City and Buffalo, NY. In September and October races are scheduled in Camden and Allentown, PA and in New Haven, CT. Over 90 have been or will be held nationally between late March and November of this year. It's a race, but more. We hope you are curious and will come to learn about it and see how you can get involved.

BTW, many thanks to Bill and Rosemary Klueber, Ira Korinow, Sheryl Meehan, Cindy Ryan and Linda Sundell for supporting me at the District 7930 Installation Dinner nearly two weeks ago. We couldn't really hear the speaker, but had a very enjoyable time together. I was really very honored to be inducted as your new president along with over 40 other new club presidents in our district and apparently over 32,000 internationally! See you soon...

Thank You from Darlene Rembis

Dear Mr. Cuneo:

Let me start by saying how truly honored I was to be one of the recipients of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award at the Foundation meeting that was held on Thursday, June 26, 2008. It was wonderful being recognized for something that I have enjoyed doing the past several years by helping to raise money for the Rotary Organization. I have also been very fortunate to work closely with several of the Rotarians, (yourself included) who are very dedicated to the organization. I feel proud that I was chosen as I know that non-members are seldom or usually not chosen for this wonderful honor.

Thank you for inviting my family and welcoming me into the group of "Paul Harris Fellow Recipients".

Best Regards,

Darlene Rembis

Rotarian needed for Summer Reading Committee

The Haverhill Public Library and the Haverhill Schools have a longstanding collaboration to develop summer reading lists for students. Since reading can be very "uncool" for many high schoolers in particular, we're expanding the committee to include some teens, parents and community leaders. Any Rotarian who would like to help promote reading and literacy in Haverhill please contact Mary Johnson-Lally, 978-373-1586 x621 . A literate, educated student today is the Rotarian of tomorrow! You may email Mary at mjohnson_lally@mvlc.org.
