Host Families Needed

Ana will be here in two weeks and she is counting on Haverhill Rotary.

August 5, 2008

Last Thursday I reported to you that it was our last day to find a host family for Ana from Georgia. NOT !

The District wants us to try harder and I believe they are right. I also believe that we owe Ana, ourselves, Phil Brown, Mary Gale, the Bergmans, Luca and Vin Bonanno more effort to make this happen; each for different reasons, but all because in one way or another they have stepped up to the plate to help Haverhill Rotary advance both its youth and international involvement. (I can't believe that I, a major soccer [futbol] fan am using another baseball analogy)

This is an important moment to keep the momentum going!

So please, redouble your efforts to help us find a host family!
Here's what I know:
Ana is from Georgia, a country between Turkey and Russia, on the Black Sea. She is 17 years old. Assuming we can find a Haverhill host family, Ana will be attending Haverhill High School beginning this August. She is a great student in her high school, speaks great English, and is athletic. Her best sport is tennis, I think. The officials at her school say that she is a "very good student with demonstrated leadership skills." Next best is that we find a host family and that she attend high school, say, for example, at Georgetown or Pentucket or another area high school. However, I think Haverhill would be best since we have so many ties already established there.

A prospective host family needs:
to be "checked out" via a criminal records check and a questionnaire
must have a separate bedroom
provide meals for Ana
be ready to host her for three months beginning at the end of this month (we'll need another host family then and again in the spring, but I think we have at least one of those two already in hand)
and demonstrate the willingness to support her efforts to advance her language skills further, integrate at the high school and learn more about America.

I am working to learn even more about her. If you have any leads or questions, please call me ASAP: 978-994-2214.

Family Pool Party August 24th

On another front, one of my commitments coming out of the fireside chat earlier this year was to add more and different opportunities for fellowship in the club. We discussed this at the board meeting last week, and Pam Carr has offered to host a gathering at her home for club members and their families, including the kids, on Sunday afternoon, August 24th starting at 1 PM. Pam has a pool and a large yard. I realize this is a busy time of year for many. If you can join us, great! If not, please come to the next event. It will be a "pot luck" with no grilling unless someone or a few are willing to grill for us all. We will start a sheet this Thursday where you can sign up, let us know how many are coming, and select a type of dish to bring. We hope you can come! Stay tuned for word of a theme for the event. One suggestion is related to a trial duck race in Pam's pool.

Duck Race Meeting Thursday After Lunch

This Thursday, right after the club meeting, we'll hold the second duck race meeting. Please join us if you can. We will spend as much as an hour discussing and completing a questionnaire put together by GAME to help us organize our duck race and to help them know, advise and help us better on how to proceed. Soon, we'll schedule a conference call with GAME. I hope you can make the meeting this Thursday!

Speakers Needed

Finally, please think about an excellent speaker for a club meeting this year. Ira certainly cannot do it himself. He needs all our help. If everyone could each come up with just one good speaker we'd be more than set. So please put on your thinking caps. Who have been some of our better speakers? Why? Your answers to those two questions can help lead you to inspiration for a speaker. Don't just go through the motions of reading this appeal to you. Please, take a few moments to step back and read those questions again, consider your answers and think about someone you know, or don't know, who will be a good speaker for the club. Then pick up the phone and give them a call. The rest will fall into place. If you have any questions, call Ira or me. Help us "Make Dreams Real".

Until next week...

The Trustees of Tattersall Farm and the Haverhill Rotary Club are holding "Tattersall Farm Day" on Sunday, September 14, 2008, from Noon to 5:00 PM. The farm is located at 542 North Broadway. This event is sponsored in part by the Haverhill Cultural Council, a local program of the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Tattersall Farm Day will be a New England style cultural and educational event for people of all ages from Haverhill and surrounding communities. Activities will include nature walks, beekeeping, wine making, animal and farming demonstrations, storytelling, and much more! Live entertainment will be provided by E.J. Ouellette and Crazy Maggy who will perform traditional New England fiddle music. Food and beverages will be available. Rain date is Sunday, September 21st.

We need volunteers to help that day. Last year Greg DiBurro organized Rotarians who were instrumental in the success of the food concession. This generated a substantial amount of money for the Farm. We will again be in charge of the food but we also need help with parking and other organizational aspects of this event. Everyone had fun last year and this year will surely be the same.

Kathy Bresnahan will meet with interested volunteers after this week's meeting to answer questions and sign people up. You can also reach her at 978-374-2390 x11 or by email.

Jefferson Davis Represented Haverhill Rotary well by winning the Lou Marcell Canoe Race. Unfortunately, no one mentioned to his partner and cousin Steve Davis that standing in a canoe to proclaim victory results in testing one's swimming skills in the Merrimack River current. This photo was taken just prior to getting wet.
