The Club's Thursday Meeting Place
This past week, I announced the process for selection of a meeting place for the balance of my term as well as hopefully the foreseeable future.
The Board voted to offer three choices:
1. to stay at Evenfall Restaurant in Ward Hill
2. to move to Michael's, formerly Pat's Beef House on River Street
3. to move to Haverhill Country Club
Although many of us are familiar with the sites, the Board agreed that the club members should sample each site once and then vote among the three at the following meeting to be held at a neutral site. The schedule will be as follows:
September 4th Evenfall Restaurant
September 11th Michael's Function Halls
September 18th Haverhill Country Club
September 25th TBD - voting
As we get closer to the 25th, I will review the voting procedures. It will be similar to the ones we used last January to decide between Evenfall and Bradford Country Club. The major change will be that with a selection among three sites, if on the first ballot one of them does not achieve a majority of the votes cast, that same meeting we will hold a second ballot between the top two sites from the first round of voting.
Rotary District 7930 Membership & Foundation Forum
This event will take place on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at the Sheraton Ferncroft in Danvers. Registration is from 3:00 - 3:30 PM and this Friday, September 5th is the final day for us to register. At this Thursday's meeting or in reply to this Nairator, please let me, Pam Carr or Bill Klueber know if you will go.
Basically anyone in the club is invited, as well as serious potential club member (it's a great recruitment tool!). It's $65/ person, includes dinner and the club will pay this fee on your behalf. I have noted from the podium over the past several weeks the many values of attending the meeting. For new club members, it is a great opportunity to learn more about the bigger organization that you have joined. For veterans, it is a chance to refresh and update your understanding of Rotary, to see how it has changed and stayed the same. If you are interested in getting more involved, it is a great way to get a quick overview of the many opportunities for doing good through Rotary. For all of us, it is a great opportunity for fellowship and to expand our contacts. It's a very efficient way to learn how other clubs operate. No need to reinvent the wheel!
District Governor Tom Elliott reports that the Membership & Foundation Forum Planning Committee has been meeting each month since May to plan an informative, motivating learning experience. The Membership and Foundation Programs will focus on improving Membership Growth and Retention as well as learning how to take advantage of the numerous Foundation Grants and Programs. We will also showcase our GSE, RYLA, Youth Exchange, Earlyact, Interact and Rotaract programs in the House of Friendship! The Committee Chairs and Alumni from these programs will be on hand to speak about how their involvement in these programs has changed their lives as well as the Rotary Clubs that support them. A great aspect of this year's planning has been to combine the two topics, Membership and Rotary Foundation Programs into a single event. In prior years, they were two separate meetings. This arrangement will be more efficient and allow clubs more time to meet and work locally while also offering one great chance to learn. What this means, however, is that this event on the 27th is your one great opportunity, early in this Rotary year, to learn what the District and Rotary has to offer. Seize this opportunity!
Duck Race Organizing Continues!

We will have another meeting this Thursday, right after the regular club meeting. Diane Franz, Jon Miller and I will update you on our telephone conference call with GAME as well as other contacts we have been making. We hope you can make it!
Welcome, Ana Gogua!

It was wonderful to meet Ana from Georgia and her first host parents, long-time Haverhill residents and community contributors Lucinda and Don Nolet. Thank you again so much to Lucinda and Don, the Goddu's, the Bonanno's, Kathy Bresnahan, Phil Brown, Jon Miller, Mary Gale and all others who are making this visit possible. We will all know so much more about Georgia, Russia and ourselves by the end of this year!
Tattersall Farm Day Sunday, September 14th Noon - 5 PM
(rain date September 21st)

Please don't forget to set aside a few hours or more to help the Club with this event, co-sponsored with the Tattersall Farm Trustees. Our main job is to run the refreshment booth, preparing and serving up hot dogs, burgers, sodas, chips and the like. We can also help with set up, clean up and directing parking. Last year was a very successful first year for this New England style agricultural farm day. EJ Ouellette and Crazy Maggie will again offer live music. In addition to time helping out, don't forget to set aside some time to check out the many activities, demos and displays including storytelling, winemaking, geology, hay rides, Audubon-led nature walks, swamp walkers, live animals displays, wildlife exhibits, beekeeping, raffles, farm history, art, face painting, traditional crafts and lots more. If you haven't yet put up a poster, use the one Kathy gave you last week or grab another one from her this week to help publicize the event in your workplace, business, church, synagogue or other community site.
See you Thursday,
John
