This Week's Meeting Pentucket Bank Community Room
Meeting Location Vote This Thursday
Mike Harold of the Lowell Devils will be speaking to us this week. The Lowell Devils are an ice hockey team in the American Hockey League. The New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League purchased the Lowell Lock Monsters in 2006 and renamed them "The Lowell Devils".
September 23, 2008

Selecting our meeting place: This week we meet at the Pentucket Bank Community Room, right next to the Pentucket Bank's main offices at the foot of the Baseliere Bridge between Haverhill and Bradford. This will provide our neutral site, at which to vote on our meeting site for the foreseeable future. Here is what your ballot will look like:
Please check just one for your first choice for our regular Thursday lunch meetings for the foreseeable future:
Evenfall - Beginning cost per member: $15.00
Haverhill Country Club - Beginning cost per member: $15.00
Michael's - Beginning cost per member: $15.99
The phrase "beginning cost per member" is used because there is no contract involved and the price cited is based on a handshake agreement for meals and service for our members comparable to that recently sampled at each site. Evenfall and Haverhill Country Club agreed to our $15 price. The manager of Michael's Function Halls informed Bill and I that he would only be able to meet our requested food and service for $15.99.
If you cannot make the meeting, you can cast your vote in advance of the meeting by emailing your choice to pcarr@cityofhaverhill.com or by phoning and leaving your name and your vote on my voice mail at 978 373 1971 x223. Please send the email or leave the voicemail no later than midnight this Wednesday night September 24th in order to be sure it is counted. In order that your vote be counted, please be sure to identify yourself. This will help us insure that we count only one vote for each person. At the meeting, the first round of voting will close as of 12:30 PM. Should it be necessary, the second round of voting will close as of 1:00 PM.
As I have mentioned, unless a majority of those voting for one site is achieved on the first ballot, we will hold a second vote between the top two choices of the first round. Please contact me at jcuneo@communityactioninc.org or the above phone number if you have any questions...or bring them to the meeting.
For the month of October we will continue to meet at Evenfall. If, through our vote, we do not stay at Evenfall, we will begin meeting at the selected site as of the first Thursday in November.
Tattersal Farm Day: What a great day! What a great success! Thank you, thank you, to the Rotarians who exemplified "service above self" in turning out to help sell hamburgers, hot dogs, cold drinks and popcorn! This included:
Nancy Adams, Darlene Beal, Terry Beaton, Kathy Bresnahan, Pam Carr, John Cuneo, Greg DiBurro, Jonathan Miller, Dave Shaw, Megan Shea, Jim Vanderpol
Thanks also to Greg's family members who helped: Kathy, Michelle and Samantha. If I missed anyone, please let me know so I can properly credit you and fine myself. Finally, a special thank you to Greg DiBurro for all his work gathering food, utensils, equipment, ice, donations, etc. to make our effort such a success. I don't yet have any official figures, but we sent out for extra food supplies three times, even though Greg estimated high based on last year's figures. Jon Miller will be happy if he never sees another hot dog. Dave Shaw left for the Shriner Burn Center after running the grill almost the whole afternoon (just kiddin'). Great event, Kathy!
Non-profit representatives: Please plan to stay after lunch this Thursday for up to an hour to hear about how your organization will be asked to participate in the proposed duck race fundraiser next May. We really need your input. I hope you will be there.
Team Haverhill Mural: One of the projects funded with Haverhill Rotary Club's donations this year is a portion the Team Haverhill Murals project. The mural will be unveiled this Sunday, Sept. 28th at 12:45 PM at the fence between the old Antique Mart and the Garibaldi Club (Alan Pearsall's "Looking into the Past" mural) on Washington Street. Please join me at that time to help celebrate the Club's contribution in this exciting project!
Congressman John Tierney to Speak at the Amesbury Rotary Club: Much like Congresswoman Niki Tsongas spoke at our club this year, the Amesbury Rotary Club will be hosting Congressman John Tierney as its guest speaker on Thursday October 9, 2008 at noon at the Amesbury Sports Park. Their club is extending an invitation to one representative from each club to attend this meeting. The cost for the luncheon is $15.00 and they will need to know the exact number of people attending by Wednesday October 1, 2008 in order to give an accurate count to their chef for the following week. Please email me as soon as possible if you are interested in attending as the Haverhill Club representative.
Board of Directors: The Board holds its regular monthly meeting this Wednesday morning.
That's it for this week.
See you Thursday,
John

Speakers

Brian Theirrien gave his classification talk last week. He described how he made it from an education in law enforcement to a career of community service here at the Haverhill Boys Club. Brian also told us about the renovations taking place to convert the club into the Haverhill Boys and Girls club. Being only one of two boys only clubs left in the country the Haverill club must renovate to accommodate both genders and the additional population that will result in admitting girls. Over $250,000 is still needed to complete this project and Brian is asking for our help and help from the greater Haverhill community. There have been many generous donations to the project but there is still a ways to go. Please keep them on your charitable giving radar.
