This Week's Meeting
Michael's Function Halls

Formally Pat's Beef House

Beverly School of Kenya

Bill Buck, charter member and past president of Andover Rotary along with Abdi Lidonde will speak to us about the Beverly School of Kenya. The Beverly A. Lidonde Education Corporation was founded in September 2004 by Aggrey Abdi Lidonde with the primary mission of raising funds to support the establishment of the Beverly School in Kenya, in memory of Mrs. Beverly A. Lidonde, Aggrey's mother.

The mission of the Beverly School of Kenya is to give hope to the economically disadvantaged children of Kenya, particularly the orphan children who will call the Beverly School their home. We will dedicate at least 50% of our student population to the Kenyan orphan children. In a loving and supportive environment, we will provide a comprehensive approach to learning which will include traditional reading, writing, mathematics, science, language and analysis. With our working farm, we will also focus on nutrition, well being and entrepreneurial skills. We will instill confidence, provide a path for higher education, insist on high ethical standards and build a sustainable community for Kenya as our graduates become ambassadors of hope.

September 9, 2008

September is "New Generations Month" in RI. In July, I asked you to think of a potential new member to invite to a meeting. Have you invited one yet? As our RI President 2008-9 DK Lee has said:

"Every Rotarian that we bring into our clubs helps to Make Dreams Real. Every single one is another pair of hands, and another mind, and another heart to do Rotary's work.

If we do not bring in younger members, we will miss out on a great deal of energy and expertise."

Lee said the membership of a healthy Rotary club is made up of men and women of different ages, vocations, professions, skills, and talents. A club that is not diversified is less able to conduct ambitious projects and has a narrower range of resources.

"There are many qualified professionals who may simply be overlooked because their professions are not typical for Rotary members."

Membership is every member's responsibility. Please think about potential new Haverhill Rotary Club members. Invite them as guests to a club meeting and a Rotary event. Once they have experienced what our club is about, ask another member to present them with an application to join.
Remember the M&M's: Membership Matters.

Our lunch meeting place decision making process - a quick update: After renewing our acquaintance with the site now named "Michael's Function Halls" this week and with Haverhill Country Club on the 18th, we will hold our meeting on the 25th at the Pentucket Bank Community Room on Merrimack Street. Starting after the meeting on the 18th, we will conduct balloting by phone or mail up until the 25th, and then complete the voting on the 25th. Each meeting will start at 12:15 PM as usual.

Last week, in addition to Julian's striking Africa trip presentation, we heard a brief presentation from Deb Cary supported by Past District Governor Dave Fionda about the Ray Potter Memorial Cove being erected at Winnekenni on behalf of their friend and Haverhill resident Ray Potter, struck and killed by lightning there this past summer. We dedicated the "Happy Dollars" raised last week to the Ray Potter Memorial. Deb wrote me to say that the family is truly grateful to Haverhill Rotary for our generosity! In addition, Deb left with me her contact info if you are interested in supporting their Sept. 19th fundraiser by way of attending or providing silent auction items or raffle prizes. Let me know if you need this info.

This Sunday is Tattersal Farm Day. So far the weather is looking kind of "iffy." Please hold the afternoon of the 21st free as well, just in case.

I have a great team of Haverhill Rotarians going with me to the District Forum on the 17th. They include but may not be limited to Ron Albert, Ira Korinow, Sheryl Meehan, Bill Adams and Mary Gale. Thanks!

See you Thursday,

John

Last week Julian told us how he bought his shirt. An African Safari I believe would be considered extreme shopping.
